Chapter 98 - The Last DeploymentThe afternoon sun was dipping toward the western horizon, casting long, amber rays across the rooftops of Queens and turning the East River into a sheet of liquid copper. Inside the Astoria Youth Tech Center, the students had all packed up their backpacks and headed home for the evening, leaving the cavernous room quiet, peaceful, and still.

Maya sat at her computer terminal, putting the finishing touches on the final deployment documentation for the municipal transit dashboard. With a satisfying click of her enter key, the repository was securely committed, version-controlled, and archived for the community board.

She leaned back in her chair, stretching her arms above her head with a long, contented sigh. When she turned around, she saw Mason standing by the front door of the center, wearing his thick canvas jacket, his hands resting deep inside the pockets.

"You're leaving early today, Mason?" Maya asked, a slight note of surprise in her voice.

Mason paused, his gray eyes sweeping across the warm, familiar room—past the rows of student desks, the stacks of discarded motherboards, the humming servers, and the glowing oscilloscope on the back workbench.

"The work here is done, Maya," Mason said, his voice entirely calm and matter-of-fact. "You’ve built a road that doesn't need anyone standing guard over it anymore."

Maya stood up from her chair, walking slowly across the polished wooden floor toward him. "I couldn't have built any of this without you, Mason. You taught me how to look at the whole system instead of just the screen."

Mason smiled—a rare, genuine expression that softened the hard lines of his face. He reached out and placed a heavy, reassuring hand on her shoulder for a brief moment.

"I didn't teach you anything, Maya," Mason said quietly. "I just handed you the wrench. You're the one who turned it."

Before Maya could reply, Mason turned the brass knob, pulled the heavy wooden door open, and stepped out onto the sunlit concrete of 31st Street.
