Chapter 23 - Whispers of a Coup

Back in Westchester, the evening breeze carried the sweet scent of blooming jasmine across the stone terrace where Emily stood holding her infant daughter, watching her son take his first clumsy steps across the Persian rug inside the sunlit family room.
Victoria Hartwell walked out onto the terrace, carrying a porcelain cup of chamomile tea, her eyes carrying a shadow of lingering unease.
"You've been unusually quiet today, Emily," Victoria noted softly, leaning against the stone railing beside her. "Is something troubling you regarding the quarterly board meeting tomorrow?"
Emily turned, resting her free hand gently on the railing. "It's not the numbers, Victoria. Jonathan’s intelligence network picked up whispers of movement from Julian Vance’s camp. They aren't trying to sue us in court this time. They're targeting the independent board seats."
Victoria’s expression tightened. "Arthur Pendelton's seat?"
"Arthur is still licking his wounds from the Tokyo board fiasco, but there are two other legacy board members—elderly gentlemen who were close friends of your late husband—who hold swing votes," Emily explained calmly, though her eyes flashed with fierce resolve. "If Vance can manipulate their personal or financial portfolios through offshore intermediaries, he can force a quorum and call for an emergency leadership review."

"They are coming for the crown because they cannot steal the kingdom," Victoria said fiercely. "What do you need me to do?"
Emily looked at her former mother-in-law, a deep sense of alliance passing between them. "Stay close to the children, Victoria. Leave the board room to me. I spent years building this company from dust; I won't let corporate vultures dismantle it in an afternoon."
