Chapter 88 - The Anatomy of a Threat

High above Midtown Manhattan, the glass-walled conference room on the fiftieth floor of Hartwell Prime Tower felt less like an office and more like the bridge of an ocean liner steering through a storm. The afternoon sky was the color of wet slate, casting long, austere shadows across the polished mahogany conference table.

Emily Hartwell sat at the head of the table, her posture straight, her hands resting calmly atop an open leather-bound folio. To her right, Sarah Sterling stood beside a large wall-mounted display showing a complex node map of the metropolitan financial network.

"The latest telemetry confirms Jonathan's assessment," Sarah said, tapping the screen with a digital stylus to highlight a cluster of blinking red nodes pulsing near the East River. "Viktor Vance has established an operational base in a commercial warehouse in Long Island City. He’s systematically isolating our secondary data loops, trying to force a bottleneck."

Arthur Pendelton, the senior board member whose hands still trembled slightly when he remembered the Singapore blackout, shifted uncomfortably in his leather chair. "If Vance manages to isolate our transatlantic trunk, our European expansion papers won't clear the regulatory hurdles by Friday. The board will panic, and the short-sellers will tear our stock price to pieces."

Emily did not look at Pendelton. Her dark eyes remained fixed on Sarah’s display, calm and utterly unshakeable.

"The board does not need to panic, Arthur," Emily said, her voice cutting through the tense silence with quiet authority. "Panic is a luxury reserved for people who mistake noise for power. Viktor Vance is operating out of desperation, not strategy. He lost billions when Alistair’s empire collapsed, and now he’s thrashing about in the dark trying to find something he can hold hostage."

"He’s not just thrashing, Emily," Jonathan added, stepping into the room from the private elevator annex. "I had a private conversation with an old contact at the Federal Reserve this morning. Viktor has been quietly acquiring distressed debt tied to municipal infrastructure projects across Queens. If he gains control of the physical utility easements around Astoria, he can legally shut down the entire neighborhood's telecommunication grid under the guise of 'scheduled maintenance.'"

Sarah crossed her arms, her jaw tightening. "Which would force our secondary loop into the open, exposing the analog trunk tied to Mason's workshop."

A slow, serene smile touched the corners of Emily’s mouth. She stood up, smoothing the front of her tailored charcoal jacket, and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the sprawling expanse of Central Park.

"Let him try to buy the easements," Emily said softly, her voice carrying an absolute, chilling certainty. "You can buy a municipal contract, Jonathan. But you cannot buy the men who laid the copper fifty years ago, and you certainly cannot buy the man who maintains them now."

"What are our orders?" Sarah asked, her professional instincts locking into place.

"No defensive maneuvers," Emily replied, turning back to face them. "Let Viktor advance his pieces. When a man spends all his time building siege engines, he always forgets to guard his own back door."
