Chapter 48 - Shadows in the Sun

Down in Astoria, the sun was bright enough to melt the thin crust of morning ice clinging to the brick stoops along 31st Street. Inside the Astoria Youth Tech Center, the sound of mechanical keyboards clacking in unison filled the warm, brightly lit room like the hum of a happy hive.

At the back row of desks, a fifteen-year-old girl named Maya was staring intently at her monitor, her brow furrowed in concentration as a complex line of code refused to compile.

"Look right here," a quiet, gravelly voice said over her shoulder.

Maya looked up as Mason leaned down beside her chair, pointing a finger at a single misplaced semicolon in her syntax script.

"You're terminating the proxy loop before the authentication handshake finishes," Mason said, his tone entirely matter-of-fact. "The compiler doesn't know where to send the return packet, so it drops the connection."

Maya quickly tapped her keyboard, deleting the semicolon and adding a proper exception handler. Instantly, the screen lit up with a brilliant, cascading stream of green deployment code. The application compiled successfully without a single warning.

She grinned from ear to ear, looking up at him with unadulterated admiration. "You make it look so easy, Mason."

"It’s not easy," Mason said, standing up straight and sliding his hands into the pockets of his canvas jacket. "It just takes patience. And knowing where to look when things break."

He glanced toward the front window of the center. Parked across the street at the curb was an idling black town car. The rear tinted window rolled down just an inch, revealing a brief, acknowledging flash of sunlight reflecting off glass before it rolled back up smoothly.

Mason gave a subtle, almost imperceptible nod toward the car.

A moment later, the town car pulled away from the curb and disappeared around the corner into the bustling morning traffic of Queens.

Maya didn't notice the car. She was already back to typing her next line of code, her fingers flying across the mechanical keys with absolute, unhesitating confidence.
