Chapter 34 - The Counter-Strike

Back in Manhattan, the digital clock on Emily’s desk read 2:14 AM.
She hadn't left the office since the initial anomaly alert triggered from the Secaucus node. Her coffee mug was stone cold, untouched for hours, but her eyes were razor-sharp, fixed entirely on the complex network visualization mapping the data extraction in real time.
Jonathan stood beside her, his hands braced on the back of her leather chair. "If Arthur is routing the extraction through that Secaucus facility, can we sever the connection from here without tipping him off?"
"If we cut the connection directly, he’ll know we found him," Emily said, her fingers dancing across the mechanical keyboard with blistering speed. "He’ll execute a remote wipe protocol and dump every scrap of stolen data into the dark web before the FBI can secure a warrant."
"Then what’s your play?" Jonathan asked, his voice steady, placing absolute trust in her analytical brilliance.
"We don't cut the connection," Emily said, a fierce, cold light flashing in her eyes. "We hijack it."
She executed a complex sequence of proxy redirections, routing a high-level counter-infiltration script straight through the encrypted pipeline Mason had left open. Instead of downloading Hartwell Prime’s source code, Arthur’s server in Secaucus began pulling a deeply buried, highly volatile payload: an unencrypted archive containing the complete financial audit of Arthur’s private offshore holdings in the Isle of Man.
"He thinks he’s stealing our future," Emily murmured, hitting the final execution key. "We’re about to foreclose on his present."
The main wall display flickered violently as the data streams collided. Across the river in Secaucus, Arthur’s terminal screen suddenly erupted into a cascade of screaming red warning text.
Arthur stared at his monitor in stunned disbelief as his private offshore ledgers began scrolling across the screen in plain text, completely bypassing his multi-layered encryption.
"What is this?" Arthur snarled, his cultured composure cracking for the first time as he slammed his hands onto the console. "Who's on the other end of this pipe?"
From the dark end of the server aisle, Mason stepped forward, clapping his hands slowly. The sound echoed off the concrete walls like gunshots.
"That would be Emily," Mason said smoothly, his hands tucked casually into his jacket pockets. "She’s always been exceptionally thorough when it comes to housecleaning."
Arthur whipped around, his face flushed with sudden, uncontainable rage. He reached inside his jacket, his hand closing around the grip of a small, cold metal pistol. "You should have stayed in Astoria, Mason. You were given a second chance, and you threw it away."
"Second chances are for people who know when they've lost," Mason said, his eyes never leaving Arthur’s hand. "You’re just out of time."
Before Arthur could pull the weapon free, the heavy metal doors of the data center slammed open with a deafening crash.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop the weapon!"
A half-dozen tactical agents swarmed down the aisle, their assault rifles raised, tactical flashlights blindingly bright in the dim hall. Arthur froze, the pistol slipping from his trembling fingers and clattering against the concrete floor.

As federal marshals forced Arthur Sterling face down onto the cold floor and snapped steel cuffs around his wrists, Mason pulled out his phone, checked the secure comms channel, and sent a single, quiet message to Manhattan:
Target secured. The house is clean.
