Chapter 42 - The Silent Alarm

The boardroom on the forty-second floor of Hartwell Prime was quiet, save for the rhythmic clicking of Jonathan Sterling’s Montblanc pen against the mahogany table. Emily sat opposite him, her eyes fixed on a secondary diagnostic monitor that tracked internal network integrity.

"The European rollout numbers are exceeding our highest quarterly projections," Jonathan said, not looking up from the consolidated financial briefs. "Institutional investors are practically beating down our doors to increase their equity stakes. We've effectively locked down the enterprise market across three continents."

Emily didn't answer immediately. Her fingers paused over her keyboard. A tiny, amber-colored telemetry indicator on the bottom right corner of her screen had just flickered—a micro-fluctuation in packet latency originating from a sub-level routing node in Queens.

"Emily?" Jonathan noticed her distraction, lowering his pen. "Is something wrong with the deployment feeds?"

"Probably nothing," Emily murmured, her analytical mind immediately dissecting the anomaly. "Just a minor routing jitter from one of our local municipal nodes. The automated load balancers handled it instantly."

"You haven't looked relaxed in a week," Jonathan noted quietly, leaning back in his chair. "Ever since Arthur’s sentencing, you’ve been running background diagnostics on our legacy subnets twice as often. You're hunting ghosts, Emily."

"Ghosts are the only things that come back after you bury them, Jonathan," she replied, her eyes narrowing as she pulled up the raw packet headers of the jitter.

The source IP address was masked behind a standard proxy loop, but the cryptographic signature embedded in the packet header wasn't civilian. It had the precise, heavy footprint of a military-grade legacy relay—the kind used by defense contractors during the early days of decentralized routing protocols.

"I'm going to run a deeper trace tonight after hours," Emily said, closing the diagnostic window with a decisive keystroke. "Just to be certain."

"Let security handle it," Jonathan cautioned.

"Security watches the front door," Emily said softly. "I watch the wire."
