Chapter 68 - The Ghost in the Pacific

Across the globe, thousands of miles away from the gleaming towers of Manhattan, a remote satellite relay station perched atop a rugged mountain ridge in the Pacific Northwest hummed with the mechanical shriek of high-capacity cooling fans. Inside the reinforced concrete bunker, rows of server racks blinked erratically, chewing through petabytes of encrypted trans-Pacific packet traffic.
Seated before a bank of high-resolution monitors in the facility’s control room was a man named Julian Vance.
Yes, Julian Vance. The disgraced former NSA signals analyst who had tried to shake down Hartwell Prime six months prior, only to have his brokerage accounts frozen and his Long Island City server racks seized by federal authorities. Julian had spent the past half-year living in the shadows of the underground data trade, surviving off burner accounts and bitter resentment. He had crawled his way back up the ladder by selling his services to a mysterious international syndicate operating out of Singapore—a group known only in darknet forums as The Redundancy Syndicate.
Julian’s bloodshot eyes scanned a scrolling waterfall of hexadecimal data on his center monitor. His fingers hovered over a split mechanical keyboard, tapping out a sequence of root-level commands designed to inject an asynchronous sniffing daemon into Hartwell Prime’s newly proposed Pacific satellite trunk.
"Got you," Julian whispered to the empty, freezing control room, a triumphant, manic grin spreading across his face.
The packet capture didn't contain financial transactions or corporate emails. It contained something far more valuable: a hard-coded cryptographic routing key stamped with an archaic, unmistakable hashing algorithm—the signature of the ghost who had dismantled his operation in Queens.
Mason’s signature.
Julian’s heart hammered against his ribs. For months, he had hunted for proof that Hartwell Prime’s defense infrastructure was backed by an unregistered ghost operative. Now, he held the cryptographic smoking gun in his palm.
He reached for his secure satellite phone, dialing an encrypted voice relay connected directly to the penthouse suite of a mega-corporation in downtown Singapore.
"This is Vance," Julian said, his voice tight with adrenaline. "I found the ghost's anchor point. He’s tied directly into Hartwell Prime’s Pacific subnets."
A heavy, distorted voice crackled through the secure earpiece from Singapore: "Can you compromise the node?"
May you like
"I don't need to compromise it," Julian laughed softly, his eyes reflecting the green glow of his terminal. "All I have to do is trigger a recursive feedback loop in their routing tables. When Hartwell Prime’s satellite grid goes dark across the entire Pacific basin during the middle of the trading day, the SEC and the Department of Defense will initiate an unsealed federal audit. And this time, Emily Hartwell won't have a national security blanket to hide behind."
"Do it," the voice commanded. "And make sure the footprint traces straight back to Queens."
