Chapter 32 - The Isle of Man Wire

The private conference room on the forty-second floor of the Hartwell Prime tower offered a panoramic view of the Manhattan skyline, glittering like a motherboard under the cold autumn stars. But inside the room, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Jonathan Sterling paced behind the mahogany conference table, his leather-soled shoes clicking rhythmically against the inlaid wood. Emily sat at the center of the table, her fingers tapping a slow, deliberate tattoo against the edge of her laptop as raw financial feeds scrolled across three external monitors.

"The wire transfer didn't come from a standard retail bank," Emily said, her voice unnervingly calm given the gravity of the data. "It cleared through a multi-tiered laundering network using a proprietary protocol called Kryptos-V. It’s an updated iteration of the exact same liquidity pipeline Julian Vance used to fund his hostile takeovers before the raid."

Jonathan stopped pacing. He leaned his palms flat on the table, staring down at the glowing analytical graphs. "I thought the Justice Department seized every offshore account linked to Vance & Sterling during the April sweeps. The prosecutors assured us the asset forfeiture was total."

"It was total for the primary accounts," Emily corrected, bringing up a complex network topology chart on the main wall display. "But Julian Vance wasn't the sole architect of the syndicate. He was just the public face—the front man with the political connections and the family name. Marcus Thorne handled the infrastructure, yes, but someone else was always managing the dark capital reserves. Someone who didn't get caught."

"Who?" Jonathan’s jaw tightened.

"That's what Mason is trying to find out," Emily said softly, switching the display to a local tracking log. "He dropped off the grid three days ago. No check-ins at the Astoria center, no responses on our secure corporate comms channel. Nothing."

Jonathan stared at her, his brow furrowing. "Mason is a wildcard, Emily. We brought him into the fold because he understood the underworld better than any of our compliance officers, but he operates outside the law. If he goes rogue—"

"He isn't going rogue," Emily interrupted, her voice cutting through Jonathan's doubt with absolute, unshakeable certainty. "He’s hunting. And if he’s hunting, it means the threat to Hartwell Prime isn't coming from a prison cell in upstate New York. It's coming from someone who is still sitting at a desk, looking at our global infrastructure blueprint, waiting for the right moment to strike."

Just then, Emily’s terminal chimed with a high-priority system alert. A red banner flashed across the screen:

SECURITY WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED PACKET SNIFFING DETECTED ON CORE ROUTING NODE 4. ORIGIN: SECACUCUS, NJ.

Emily’s eyes widened. She slammed her fingers onto the keyboard, her analytical mind shifting gears into overdrive. "They're probing the staging servers again. But this time, it's not a zero-day payload. It's a localized extraction script."

May you like

"Extraction of what?" Jonathan demanded, stepping closer.

"The entire source code for the upcoming international expansion," Emily whispered, her face pale in the blue light. "They're stealing the crown jewels."
