Chapter 24 - The Boardroom Ambush

The mahogany boardroom of Hartwell Enterprises was packed to capacity by ten o'clock the following morning. The tension in the room was thick enough to cut with a knife.

Arthur Pendelton sat near the center, looking pale and restless, while two elderly board members—former titans of Wall Street—whispered anxiously among themselves.

Emily sat at the head of the table. She wore a tailored ivory blazer, her posture upright, her expression an impenetrable mask of absolute calm.

The heavy oak doors swung open, and Marcus Thorne walked into the room uninvited, flanked by two corporate attorneys carrying leather briefcases.

"Good morning, members of the board," Marcus announced smoothly, flashing a predatory smile as he strolled toward the foot of the table. "I apologize for the uninvited intrusion, but I represent a coalition of major institutional shareholders holding a commanding twenty-eight percent block of voting shares."

Arthur Pendelton slammed his hand onto the table. "Mr. Thorne, you have no standing in this meeting! This is a closed executive session!"

"Actually, Mr. Pendelton, it isn't," Marcus countered smoothly, tossing a set of bound financial documents onto the table. "Under Article 12, Section 4 of the corporate bylaws, a coalition holding over a quarter of voting equity can demand an immediate leadership review if there is evidence of asset mismanagement or conflict of interest."

Murmurs erupted around the table. The two elderly swing board members exchanged nervous glances.

Emily remained completely still. She didn't flinch, she didn't raise her voice. She simply folded her hands on the table and looked directly into Marcus Thorne’s eyes.

"Conflict of interest, Mr. Thorne?" Emily asked, her voice ringing clear and steady across the silent room. "Do enlighten us. What possible conflict of interest could there be in running a company that has doubled its net revenue and secured zero-debt compliance over the past six months?"

Marcus smiled, leaning forward over the table. "The conflict, Mrs. Hartwell, lies in the fact that your entire intellectual property portfolio is entangled with personal family trusts involving former executives who were legally ousted by judicial decree—specifically, your estranged husband, Mason Hartwell, and his family estate."

The room went dead silent. All eyes turned to Emily.
