Chapter 8
Alex approached Lily slowly.
He did not touch her.
He crouched several feet away so he would not tower over her.
“Hey, Lily.”
She recognized him.
We had seen Alex and his family at a summer cookout the year before.
“Mr. Ramirez?”
“That’s me.”
Her voice was small.
“Are we in trouble?”
Alex’s expression softened.
“No.”
Lily looked at Sarah.
Then at me.
“Really?”
“Really. Your dad called because he wants to make sure you’re okay.”
Lily nodded.
Alex asked only a few basic questions before stopping.
He did not push her to relive the entire moment in the foyer.
One of the uniformed officers spoke quietly with me about getting Lily evaluated.
Sarah immediately agreed.
“I want her checked.”
Claudia overheard.
“That’s unnecessary.”
Sarah turned.
It was remarkable how quickly a single decision can change the balance inside a room.
Twenty minutes earlier, Claudia’s voice could silence her daughter.
Now Sarah did not even flinch.
“You don’t make decisions for Lily.”
“I’m her grandmother.”
“And I’m her mother.”
Claudia stared at her.
Sarah continued.
“We’re taking her to the hospital.”
Jared shook his head.
“This is insane.”
Alex looked toward him.
“Sir, I need you to keep your distance from the child.”
Jared laughed bitterly.
“I wasn’t going near her.”
“Good.”
One of the officers began speaking separately with the other dinner guests.
Their accounts were hesitant.
I could hear fragments.
“It happened quickly.”
“I didn’t see the exact moment.”
“Everyone was upset.”
“I’m not sure.”
Fear still controlled them.
Then the officer spoke with Sarah.
She told the truth.
Her voice shook, but she told it.
Finally, Alex asked about the recording.
I handed him my phone.
“I started it before anything happened because Jared was getting aggressive verbally.”
Alex glanced at the screen.
“You’ve kept it running?”
“Yes.”
“That may be useful.”
Jared’s face tightened.
“What recording?”
Nobody answered.
He stepped forward.
Alex immediately raised a hand.
“Stay where you are.”
Jared stopped.
For the first time all evening, uncertainty replaced arrogance.
“You recorded me?”
I looked at him.
“I recorded dinner.”
His eyes shifted toward Claudia.
That look told me everything.
They had planned to deny it.
Maybe not formally.
Maybe not immediately.
But they had already assumed the truth could be reshaped.
The recording changed that calculation.
Claudia’s voice became noticeably quieter.
“Ryan, perhaps we should discuss this privately.”
I almost smiled.
Ten minutes earlier, she had threatened Sarah’s inheritance.
May you like
Now she wanted privacy.
“No.”
