Chapter 15

Jared eventually issued an apology through his attorney.

It was four paragraphs long.

The word “sorry” appeared once.

The word “but” appeared five times.

He was sorry the evening had become upsetting.

But tensions had been high.

He regretted Lily felt frightened.

But he had believed she was disrespectful.

He wished he had handled it differently.

But parents today often misunderstood discipline.

Sarah stopped reading halfway through.

“He still thinks he’s right.”

“Yes.”

“He thinks his mistake was getting caught.”

I looked at the letter.

“Yes.”

We declined the request for a private family meeting.

Then Claudia came to our house.

It was a cold Saturday morning.

Sarah saw her through the living-room window.

Her mother stood on the porch wearing a camel-colored coat and holding a leather handbag.

She looked less like a desperate mother than someone arriving for a board meeting.

“I don’t want her inside,” Sarah said.

“Then she doesn’t come inside.”

I stayed several feet behind Sarah when she opened the door.

Claudia looked past her at me.

“Can we speak privately?”

“No.”

“I’m your mother.”

“Yes.”

“That should mean something.”

“It does.”

Claudia’s face tightened.

“Sarah, I am trying to save this family.”

Sarah shook her head.

“No. You’re trying to save the version where nobody challenges you.”

“That’s unfair.”

“Was it unfair when you told me to keep quiet as a teenager?”

Claudia stiffened.

“That has nothing to do with this.”

“It has everything to do with this.”

“You always were dramatic.”

Sarah almost smiled.

“That sentence used to work.”

Claudia blinked.

“What?”

“It doesn’t anymore.”

Behind Sarah, I saw her hands trembling.

Courage is often mistaken for the absence of fear.

Sarah was afraid.

She simply refused to obey the fear.

Claudia lowered her voice.

“Do you understand what you’re giving up financially?”

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.”

“And Lily?”

“What about her?”

“You’re taking millions away from her future.”

Sarah’s expression hardened.

May you like

“No. I’m keeping her from learning that money is worth being afraid in her own family.”

Then she closed the door.
