Chapter 2

I looked at Sarah first.

I wish I could say my wife immediately stood and confronted them.

She didn’t.

She stared at her plate.

Her hands were locked together beneath the table, her knuckles nearly white.

Her face had gone pale.

It was not indifference.

I knew my wife too well for that.

It was fear.

Not the ordinary kind of fear that appears when something unexpected happens. This looked older. Deeper. Familiar.

I had seen hints of it before.

Whenever Claudia raised her voice, Sarah became quieter.

Whenever Jared entered a room irritated, Sarah instinctively checked where Lily was.

Whenever Claudia threatened to cut Sarah out of the family trust, my wife would suddenly become eager to end the conversation.

I had always assumed Sarah was trying to avoid unnecessary conflict.

Watching her that night, I finally understood.

She had not learned how to avoid conflict.

She had learned how to survive it.

“Lily.”

I pushed my chair back and dropped to my knees beside my daughter.

She blinked up at me.

Her eyes were glassy with shock.

“Daddy?”

“I’m here.”

She reached for me immediately.

I helped her sit upright, careful not to move her too quickly.

“Does anything hurt?”

“My face.”

Her voice was barely audible.

I checked her carefully. There was a small mark near her lip, but nothing that appeared immediately serious. I still knew she needed to be examined by a medical professional.

More importantly, she needed to get away from that table.

Jared gave a frustrated sigh.

“Oh, come on. She’s fine.”

I looked up at him.

He actually sounded inconvenienced.

“She’s ten.”

“And she was being disrespectful.”

“She defended her mother.”

“She needs discipline.”

I stood slowly, bringing Lily with me.

She wrapped both arms around my neck and buried her face against my shoulder.

I could feel her trembling.

That sensation—the shaking of my child against my chest—did more to control my anger than anything else could have.

There was a heavy crystal pitcher near Jared’s place setting.

For half a second, my attention landed on it.

Then Lily whispered my name again.

“Daddy.”

That one word brought me back.

I understood exactly what Jared wanted.

He wanted me angry.

He wanted me reckless.

He wanted me to respond in a way his family could later use against me.

Men like Jared rarely believed consequences applied to them.

If I lost control, the story would change before midnight.

Jared would become the victim.

I would become the dangerous outsider.

Lily would become the difficult child who “started everything.”

By breakfast, Claudia would have repeated the rewritten version so many times that half the family would believe it.

I refused to give them that opportunity.

I held Lily closer.

“I’ve got you,” I whispered. “Nobody here gets to treat you like that again.”
