Chapter 4

I had started recording twenty minutes earlier.

It had not been some elaborate plan.

Jared had arrived already irritated.

He had been drinking bourbon before dinner, and his comments had gradually become sharper.

First he criticized my job.

Then our neighborhood.

Then Lily’s school.

Then Sarah.

I had watched the pattern enough times to recognize the direction in which the evening was moving.

So while everyone was distracted by Claudia arguing with a caterer about dessert, I had opened the voice recorder on my phone and placed it screen-down beside my leg.

I did it because experience had taught me something important about Sarah’s family.

Memory changed whenever accountability entered the room.

A cruel comment became a joke.

A threat became concern.

A raised voice became “passion.”

And any person who objected was accused of being too sensitive.

The recording had captured Claudia criticizing Sarah.

It had captured Lily asking her grandmother to stop.

It had captured Jared’s response.

It had captured the commotion immediately afterward.

It had captured Claudia saying, “That’s what brats deserve.”

My pulse slowed.

I did not feel calmer.

I felt focused.

Under the table, I shifted Lily onto my left arm and reached for the phone with my right hand.

The recording indicator was still running.

Good.

There was one person I needed.

Alex Ramirez.

Alex and I had shared a cramped apartment during college at Ohio State, long before either of us had mortgages, children, or gray hairs beginning at the temples.

He had eventually joined law enforcement and later became a state police detective.

More importantly, he knew Sarah’s history.

Two years earlier, Sarah had finally told me that Jared had been pressuring her to stay silent about questionable dealings connected to one of the family’s companies.

Nothing had come of it legally because Sarah refused to provide a formal statement.

At the time, I had been frustrated.

Now I understood why.

Alex had told me something then that stayed with me.

“If you ever think Sarah or Lily is in immediate danger, don’t negotiate with these people. Call.”

I tapped his number.

He answered almost immediately.

“Ramirez.”

“I need you at Claudia’s house.”

There was no hesitation.

“What happened?”

“Jared lost control with Lily. She’s ten, Alex. I have the conversation recorded.”

His tone changed.

“Is she safe with you now?”

“Yes.”

“Is Jared still there?”

“Yes.”

“Stay with your daughter. Don’t confront him physically.”

“I won’t.”

“I’m heading your way.”

I glanced across the room at Jared.

“Alex?”

“Yeah?”

“Bring uniformed officers.”

A short silence followed.

Then he said, “Understood.”

I ended the call.

Jared was watching me.

He smirked.

“Who was that?”

May you like

I slipped the phone back into my pocket.

“Someone who can help.”
