Chapter 20

The legal case eventually reached a resolution.

Jared did not walk away untouched, nor did the process become the dramatic spectacle Claudia had predicted.

There were formal consequences, court requirements, counseling obligations, and restrictions designed to protect Lily.

The exact details mattered less to me than one fact.

For once, Jared could not rewrite what happened.

The recording existed.

Statements existed.

Medical documentation existed.

Sarah’s testimony existed.

Truth had weight.

After one hearing, Jared passed us in the courthouse hallway.

He looked older.

Not transformed.

Not humbled in some cinematic way.

Just tired.

He stopped several feet away.

His attorney immediately touched his elbow, signaling him to keep moving.

Jared looked at Sarah.

“You happy now?”

She stared at him.

“No.”

He seemed surprised.

“You ruined my life.”

Sarah’s expression did not change.

“You still think this is about what happened to you.”

His jaw tightened.

The attorney urged him forward.

Sarah watched him walk away.

Then she exhaled.

I put my hand against her back.

“You okay?”

“Yes.”

And she was.

Not because Jared apologized.

He hadn’t.

Not because Claudia understood.

May you like

She didn’t.

Sarah was okay because neither was required anymore.
