Chapter 12

Claudia called at 8:07 the next morning.

We did not answer.

She called again at 8:11.

Then 8:19.

Then 8:32.

By nine, there were twelve missed calls.

At 9:14, Sarah’s younger brother called.

She let that go to voicemail too.

At 9:30, the messages began.

Mom is devastated.

Jared feels terrible.

Nobody meant for this to happen.

Can we please talk?

This has gone too far.

Think about what this will do to the family.

Not one message began with the words we needed to hear.

How is Lily?

At 10:03, Claudia finally sent it.

Is Lily okay?

Sarah stared at the screen.

“She waited almost two hours to ask.”

I said nothing.

Five minutes later another message arrived.

We need to coordinate our statements before people misunderstand what happened.

Sarah showed it to me.

There was the real priority.

I took a screenshot.

Alex had told us to preserve communications.

We did.

By noon, Claudia’s tone changed.

Jared has retained counsel. I strongly suggest you do the same before making accusations that could have serious consequences.

At 12:17:

Your father would be horrified by what you’re doing.

At 12:44:

The trust committee meets next month. I cannot protect your interests if you continue down this path.

Sarah stared at that message longer than the others.

Then she opened her banking app.

“What are you doing?”

“Looking at our accounts.”

“Why?”

“I want to see exactly how much we have without anything connected to my family.”

We spent the next hour reviewing everything.

Mortgage.

Retirement accounts.

Savings.

College fund.

Insurance.

Our jobs.

We were not wealthy like Claudia.

But we were secure.

We could pay our bills.

We could raise Lily.

We could live without a single dollar from the trust.

Sarah leaned back.

“All these years.”

“What?”

“I acted like leaving meant falling off a cliff.”

I closed the laptop.

“It doesn’t.”

“No.”

She looked toward the hallway where Lily was watching cartoons.

“It means walking away.”
