Chapter 6

For the first time since I had known Claudia, she seemed genuinely speechless.

Sarah took one step toward me.

Then another.

She stopped beside Lily and touched our daughter’s back.

Lily looked up.

“Mom?”

Sarah’s face crumpled for half a second before she regained control.

“I’m right here, sweetheart.”

Lily reached one hand toward her.

Sarah took it.

Claudia stood so abruptly that her chair shifted behind her.

“You have no idea what you’re saying.”

“I know exactly what I’m saying.”

“You are throwing away your daughter’s future.”

Sarah stared at her.

“No. I’m finally protecting it.”

Claudia’s mouth tightened.

“You’ll regret this.”

Sarah gave a small nod.

“Maybe. But I won’t regret choosing her.”

I had spent fourteen years married to Sarah.

I had watched her give presentations to rooms filled with executives.

I had watched her manage our finances, negotiate a mortgage, challenge an insurance company, and calmly handle a highway breakdown during a snowstorm.

Yet around her mother, she became smaller.

That night, standing beside me beneath the chandelier in Claudia’s dining room, she seemed to reclaim several inches of herself.

Jared laughed again.

“You two are unbelievable.”

Sarah turned toward him.

He stopped smiling.

She did not yell.

That somehow made the moment stronger.

“You frightened my daughter.”

“Sarah—”

“You frightened her.”

“She mouthed off.”

“She asked Mom to stop insulting me.”

“She’s a child. Children need boundaries.”

“So do adults.”

Jared stared at his sister as though she had started speaking another language.

The family had spent years teaching Sarah that disagreement was betrayal.

Now she was betraying the only thing that deserved betrayal—the rules that had kept her silent.

Outside, tires moved along the street.

Jared glanced toward the front windows.

Then back at me.

I said nothing.

A few seconds later, the sound came again.

Closer.

A siren.

Claudia’s eyes widened slightly.

Jared’s expression changed.

Not much.

Just enough.

“You actually called the police?”

“I called someone I trust.”

“You idiot.”

Sarah stepped closer to me.

Jared moved around his chair.

“Do you have any idea what you’re doing to this family?”

I shifted Lily higher against my chest.

“Yes.”

He waited.

May you like

I looked him directly in the eye.

“I’m stopping it.”
