Chapter 27

Claudia requested a meeting when Lily was thirteen.

Not through relatives.

Through a therapist.

That surprised us.

Her message was careful.

She said she had spent more than a year in counseling.

She did not ask for forgiveness.

She did not mention inheritance.

She asked whether Sarah might be willing to meet in a neutral location, without Lily present.

Sarah thought about it for weeks.

Eventually, she agreed.

They met at a therapist’s office.

I waited at a coffee shop across the street.

When Sarah emerged ninety minutes later, I could not read her face.

She sat across from me.

“How was it?”

Sarah stared into her coffee.

“She apologized.”

I waited.

“For real?”

“I think so.”

“What did she say?”

“She said she protected Jared because admitting what he was doing would mean admitting what she had allowed.”

Sarah’s voice trembled.

“She said protecting her image became more important than protecting her children.”

I squeezed her hand.

“What did you say?”

“I told her I appreciated the apology.”

“And?”

“And I told her forgiveness doesn’t automatically restore access.”

I nodded.

“That sounds healthy.”

“She cried.”

“How did that feel?”

“Awful.”

A pause.

“And also okay.”
