Chapter 9 - MRS. GABLEEvelyn Gable lived across the road from Diana.

Widow.
Retired school secretary.
The woman who called me.
She told Hannah she had been watching the porch for nearly an hour before she dialed 911.
“Why wait?”
Mrs. Gable cried.
“Because Diana told me it was therapeutic.”
“She had paperwork.”
“She said the father was a sheriff and had approved everything.”
Mrs. Gable looked at me when she said it.
“I believed the paper.”
That sentence again.
Paper.
Authority.
Adult certainty.
All stronger than the child in front of them.
Then Mrs. Gable remembered something.
A white SUV visited Diana’s house at 11:10 that morning.
Driver:
Malcolm Pierce.
He carried a blue plastic document case.
Not a folder.
A case.
May you like
Diana took it inside.
He left eleven minutes later without it.
