Chapter 13 - WHY EMMAThe obvious question remained.

Why risk targeting the sheriff’s daughter?

The answer was in Laura’s final notes.

Diana knew Laura had copied records.

She did not know where they were.

After Laura’s death, she apparently searched our home indirectly.

County wellness visits.

Grief support.

Home-safety assessment.

I remembered them.

I allowed social workers inside because Emma had lost her mother.

One worker later joined Harrington Family Stability Network.

Then nothing.

Until a year later, Diana learned Laura had told someone about a blue folder.

Who?

A former county accountant named Peter Lyle.

Peter had helped Laura verify invoices.

He died of cancer three months before Emma’s placement.

Before he died, someone from Harrington visited him.

His daughter remembered the name Diana.

Diana learned the folder existed.

She assumed Laura had hidden it somewhere Emma might know.
