Chapter 39 - LAURA’S BIRTHDAYOn Laura’s fortieth birthday, Emma and I drove to the cemetery.

Emma placed a blue folder on the grave.
Empty.
Just cardboard.
“I made Mom one.”
I smiled.
“What’s inside?”
“Nothing.”
“Why?”
“She already knows everything.”
I nearly lost it.
Then Emma asked:
“Did Mom save me?”
I thought carefully.
“Yes.”
“But not alone.”
“She saved evidence.”
“Mrs. Gable called.”
“Dr. Patel helped your heart.”
“Hannah found the truth.”
“You told what happened.”
“And I cut the lock.”
Emma nodded.
“So everybody?”
“Yes.”
May you like
“Good.”
She liked answers where one person was not required to be everything.
