Chapter 19 - EMMA’S INTERVIEWEmma was interviewed at the Child Advocacy Center.

I watched through glass.
No uniform.
No badge.
Just father.
Dr. Naomi Blake sat across from her with crayons.
Emma drew a house.
Then a porch.
Then a long yellow line around a stick figure.
“What is the yellow?”
“Chain.”
Naomi did not ask:
Did Diana chain you?
She asked:
“Tell me about the chain.”
Emma said Diana called it a “thinking chain.”
Asked where Mom’s folder was.
Emma said she did not know.
Diana asked where Laura hid “important papers.”
Emma cried.
Asked for Dad.
Diana said:
“Your dad signed you away.”
Then Emma described the monitor.
First beep.
Diana pressed buttons.
It stopped.
Later Emma felt dizzy.
Asked for medicine.
Diana held the bottle.
Then put it on a shelf.
“Why?”
May you like
“She said I had to earn it.”
Behind the glass, Hannah wrote nothing for several seconds.
