Chapter 7 - MALCOLM PIERCEHannah brought Malcolm in voluntarily.
He arrived with an attorney.
He admitted entering the county office.
Claimed Diana called him at 1:30 a.m.
Said Hopewell could not safely manage Emma’s cardiac condition.
“Why did you believe her?”
“She runs the specialized network.”
“Why forge a judge’s authorization?”
“I didn’t.”
“Your account accessed it.”
“Someone used my computer.”
“Your badge entered the building.”
“My badge was in my desk.”
“Then how did you enter?”
Silence.
Eventually Malcolm changed his story.
He said Diana threatened him.
With what?
An audit.
Harrington Family Stability Network had overbilled the county for years.
Malcolm approved invoices.
Some were false.
Diana knew.
“If I didn’t move Emma,” he said, “she would give everything to the state.”
Hannah asked:
“Why Emma?”
Malcolm looked down.
