Chapter 33 - DIANA TESTIFIESAgainst her attorneys’ advice, Diana took the stand.

She was good.
Calm.
Articulate.
She described difficult children.
Overwhelmed parents.
Underfunded county programs.
She claimed extreme methods sometimes prevented worse outcomes.
The prosecutor asked:
“Did withholding Emma Mercer’s heart medication prevent a worse outcome?”
Diana answered:
“I did not intentionally withhold it.”
“Then why was the bottle in your trash?”
“I don’t know.”
“Why did you silence the alarm?”
“I believed the monitor was malfunctioning.”
“For nearly three hours?”
“Yes.”
“Why did you write that a second cardiac episode was expected after 4:30?”
“Monitoring projection.”
“Why ask a five-year-old where her dead mother hid a folder?”
Silence.
Then:
“I believed Laura Mercer stole confidential records.”
The prosecutor leaned forward.
“So you restrained her medically fragile child to recover documents?”
“No.”
May you like
“What would you call it?”
Diana had no answer.
