Chapter 8

Daniel showed up at Maya’s apartment that night.
Of course he did.
He buzzed from downstairs until a neighbor threatened to call police.
Then he shouted from the sidewalk.
“Emily! Come down!”
Maya opened the window.
“Leave before I turn this into a community event.”
Daniel looked up.
“Maya, stay out of my marriage.”
She smiled.
“I’m trying. Your marriage keeps trespassing.”
I almost laughed.
Then Daniel shouted, “Emily, you owe me a conversation!”
I stepped into view.
“No, I owe myself safety.”
His face shifted when he saw me.
Soft voice.
Sad eyes.
The version that used to work.
“Baby, I panicked. I thought he was taking advantage of you.”
“By signing a clinic partnership?”
“He was charming you.”
“He was respecting me.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
“I am your husband.”
“And soon you’ll be my ex.”
Silence.
Then he screamed, “You think you’re important now because some rich man likes your proposal?”
Maya lifted her phone.
“Perfect. Say that again for the recording.”
May you like
Daniel saw the phone and stepped back.
That told me he knew exactly what he sounded like.
