Chapter 3

Hotel security arrived before Daniel could make another scene.

Someone had called them.

Maybe a waiter.

Maybe Mr. Lawson.

Maybe one of the fifty strangers watching my marriage collapse over white tablecloths.

Daniel tried to straighten his jacket.

“This is unnecessary.”

Security did not agree.

One guard stepped between him and me.

“Sir, you need to leave.”

Daniel pointed at me.

“She is my wife.”

The guard said, “She asked you to stop touching her.”

That simple sentence made my throat tighten.

A stranger had understood consent faster than my husband.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emily, tell them.”

I picked up my ring from the table.

For one second, he looked relieved.

Then I dropped it into my purse instead of putting it back on.

“Leave.”

His face darkened.

“You’ll regret this.”

Mr. Lawson looked at security.

“I would like that noted.”

Daniel was escorted out while the entire restaurant watched.

He did not look jealous anymore.

He looked exposed.

That was worse for him.

When he was gone, my knees weakened.

Mr. Lawson pulled out a chair.

“Sit.”

I sat because I had no strength left to pretend.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered.

Mr. Lawson shook his head.

“You have nothing to apologize for.”

“My husband ruined your evening.”

“Your husband revealed a crime.”

I looked at the email again.

My name at the bottom.

My company signature.

My breath turned thin.

“I need to call my boss.”

Mr. Lawson nodded.

“And a lawyer.”

“Yes.”

He slid the folder toward me.

“I saved everything. The email. The call log. The building visitor record. Security footage from my office. I suspected something was wrong when you still showed up tonight.”

I looked up.

“You knew?”

“I knew the email did not sound like the woman who prepared that proposal.”

May you like

That sentence nearly broke me.

A client who barely knew me had seen my work more clearly than the man sleeping beside me.
