Chapter 19

Ten years after that night, Mr. Lawson invited me to speak at a leadership event in the same hotel restaurant.
I almost said no.
Then I said yes.
The room looked different.
Or maybe I did.
Table twelve was still near the window.
I stood beside it before the event started.
I remembered the proposal hitting the floor.
Daniel’s hand around my wrist.
The ring on the table.
My own voice saying, “I want a divorce.”
Mr. Lawson walked up quietly.
“Are you all right?”
I smiled.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
He looked at the table too.
“For what it’s worth, that was the strangest partnership meeting of my career.”
I laughed.
“Mine too.”
Then he said, “Also one of the most important.”
He was right.
May you like
Not because of Daniel.
Because of what I chose after him.
