This time at my company office.
With Denise present.
With legal present.
With security downstairs.
I walked into the conference room expecting pity.
Mr. Lawson stood and shook my hand.
“Mrs. Carter.”
I paused.
“Emily is fine.”
He nodded.
“Emily.”
He placed a clean copy of the proposal on the table.
“I reviewed your numbers again. The partnership is still promising.”
My throat tightened.
“After everything?”
“Especially after everything. Your preparation was strong enough that I did not believe the withdrawal email. That matters.”
Denise looked at me with a small smile.
I sat down.
For the first time in years, a room full of people treated my work as mine.

Not my marriage’s problem.

No shouting.
No accusations.
No husband bursting through doors.
At the end, Mr. Lawson signed a letter of intent.
My hands shook when I held it.
May you like
Not from fear.
From the strange weight of being believed.
