Chapter 19 - THE CONFESSIONThe signing took three hours. Lawyers arrived — neutral, independent, summoned by David. Page after page Sebastian signed without reading, his hand trembling, his eyes fixed on nothing but the floor. When it was done, he placed his pen upon the final document and looked up at Mia.

“May I ask one thing?” he said.
“Ask,” Mia said.
“Will you ever tell me — what Lila named you? Before…”
“Mia,” she said. “She named me Mia Elena.”
Sebastian closed his eyes. A single tear slid down his cheek.
“She always loved flowers,” he whispered. “She always said… Mia means the beginning.”
He stood slowly, leaning on his cane.
“I will leave by the back gate,” he said. “I will not trouble you again. But know this — whatever I am, whatever I have done… I am glad you exist. Both of you.”
He walked past them without another word and disappeared into the shadows of the corridor.
We stood in silence. Julian was the first to speak.
“He will not keep his word,” he said quietly. “Not truly. He may sign it all away… but men like him do not let go easily.”
“Let him come back,” Mia said. She touched the silver box, now closed and safe in her arms. “Grace prepared us for everything. Even him.”
We walked out of the vault together. The morning sun was bright over the hills. The guards were gone. The estate felt lighter, as if a heavy shadow had begun to lift.
David met us at the car, his phone in hand.
“Evelyn is dead,” he said quietly. “Found in her cell an hour ago. Apparent heart failure. Before she could be questioned again.”
Mia stopped. “Did he —”
“We do not know,” David said. “No one will ever know. But she took many secrets with her.”
“And Vanessa?” Julian asked.
David shook his head.
“Still missing. But she sent this — to my office, this morning.”
He handed Mia a folded scrap of paper. Written in Vanessa’s handwriting:
Well done. Lila would be proud. I am far away. Safe. Tell Julian I am sorry I never knew him. Tell Mia — she is braver than I was.
Mia read it twice, then folded it carefully and placed it beside Sebastian’s confession.
“She is gone,” Mia said. “And she is at peace.”
May you like
Elena touched her arm gently.
“As are we. At last.”
