Chapter 11 - THE TRUTH WE CARRY

We drove back to the estate in silence. Mia sat in the back seat, clutching the small silver locket Vanessa had pressed into her hand before driving away. She did not ask questions. She did not demand explanations. She simply held the locket tight and stared out the window at the passing trees.
When we arrived, we gathered around the fireplace in the main room. I inserted the flash drive into my laptop.
Grace’s voice filled the room.
*“If you are listening to this, then Vanessa has made her choice. And I am gone.”*
Elena covered her face with her hands. I gripped the edge of the desk.
*“Mia,”* Grace continued, “if you are listening too — know this: your mother was brave, kind, and fiercely loving. She gave her life so that you might live. She was Elena’s twin sister. Her name was LILA.”
I felt Mia go still beside me.
*“The man who killed her is your father. His name is SEBASTIAN HALEWOOD. He is one of the wealthiest and most powerful men in the country. He is also a dangerous, ruthless man who will destroy anyone who stands between him and what he wants. He wanted an heir — a son. When Lila gave birth to a daughter, he ordered her killed. He did not know you survived.”*
My blood ran cold.
*“Elena risked everything to save you. I took you in. I raised you as my own. I gave you the name Holloway so that Sebastian would never find you. Because as long as he believes Lila’s child died with her — you are safe.”*
Grace paused on the recording. When she spoke again, her voice was trembling.
*“Evelyn found out. She discovered the truth. She told Sebastian. He sent Vanessa — Lila’s own sister — to destroy us. But I knew Vanessa. I knew she loved Lila. So I left her the truth. I left her the choice. And I prayed she would choose to protect you instead of him.”*
Grace’s voice grew stronger.
*“The documents in the safety deposit box contain everything. Sebastian’s crimes. His illegal business dealings. Proof of Lila’s murder. And proof that YOU are his sole heir. If he dies without a will — or if he is convicted of a crime — EVERYTHING he owns passes to you.”*
I stared at the screen. “Everything.”
*“That is why he will never let you live, Mia. He cannot let his own daughter inherit. He will kill you before he lets that happen. So you must stay hidden. You must stay safe. And when you turn twenty-five — you decide. Reveal the truth and take everything from him. Or stay hidden and live in peace. I leave that choice to you.”*
Grace’s final words were soft, filled with love.
*“Whatever you choose — know that you are loved. By me. By Elena. By the mother who gave her life to save you. Be brave, my sweet girl. And choose wisely.”*
The recording ended.
No one spoke for a long time. The fire crackled in the hearth. Outside, the wind rustled through the trees.
Mia walked slowly to the desk and touched the screen. “She sounds like you,” she said quietly to Elena. “Like you, but softer.”
Elena wiped her eyes. “She was my other half. We were never apart. Until the day she died.”
Mia turned to face us, her small face solemn and impossibly brave.
“Vanessa said he will come for me,” she said. “My father. Sebastian.”
“Yes,” I said. “He will.”
“Then we must find him first.”
Elena started. “Mia — no. Grace said —”
“Grace said I must choose,” Mia interrupted. “And I choose to stop hiding. I choose to make him sorry he hurt my mother.”
I looked at my daughter — so small, so young, and yet carrying a strength that would have broken most adults. She had inherited Lila’s courage. Grace’s wisdom. And something else — a quiet, unshakable resolve that terrified me and filled me with pride all at once.
“Mia,” I said gently, “he is powerful. Dangerous. We do not even know where to find him.”

Mia reached into her pocket and pulled out the locket Vanessa had given her. She opened it. Inside lay a small slip of paper.
“Vanessa wrote this,” Mia said. “She told me to open it only when I was ready. She said — if I wanted to find him — he lives at the Halewood estate. And she wrote down his phone number.”
