Chapter 16 - THE HALF-BROTHER (Continued)

“You’re late,” he said. “Grace told me you would be coming.”
We stared at him.
“You knew?” Elena asked.
“Grace visited me every year,” Julian said, wiping his hands on his apron. “She told me who I was. Who my father was. Who Mia was. She told me — one day — you would come asking for help. That Sebastian would show his true face, and we would have to stand together.”
He stepped out from behind the counter and locked the shop door, flipping the sign to CLOSED.
“She said I’d have a choice,” Julian continued, his voice steady. “To stay hidden, safe and quiet. Or to stand beside the sister I’ve never met — and bring the man who destroyed our families down.”
He walked to a shelf at the back of the store, pulled down a thick leather binder, and carried it to the counter.
“I’ve been waiting,” he said. “Grace left me everything. Bank records. Birth certificates. Witness statements. Letters from my mother before she died. Sebastian never acknowledged me. He paid her off to stay silent — then cast her aside when she fell ill. She died believing he’d never care enough to destroy her.”
He opened the binder. The pages were filled with dates, names, transfers, and handwritten notes.
“Sebastian has built his empire on lies and silence,” Julian said. “He hid me so the world would think he had no son — then erased Lila so no one would know he ever had a daughter. Grace told me: When the time comes, give Mia what she needs to finish what her mother started.”
He looked straight at Mia.
“I’m sorry about your mother,” he said softly. “She was my sister too, in a way. And I’ve spent my whole life hating the man who killed her.”
Mia stepped forward, her eyes bright but steady. “You’re not like him.”
“No,” Julian said. “I’m not. And neither are you.”
He turned back to us.
“Sebastian’s claim — that you’re holding Mia hostage — falls apart the moment I step forward. I can prove who she is. I can prove who he is. And I can prove everything Grace said was true. But once I speak… I can never go back to this quiet life. He will hunt me too.”
“None of us will be safe until this ends,” I said. “Grace knew that. She believed you would choose to stand with us.”

Julian traced a line of his mother’s handwriting.
“Grace was always right,” he whispered. Then he closed the binder and gripped it tight. “Tell me where to be. Tell me what to say. And let’s finish this.”
