Chapter 13 - THE SECRET FROM THE PAST

We did not go immediately. We spent three more days preparing. David arranged for independent witnesses. Elena arranged for private security — men who did not work for the police, men who did not know Sebastian, men who answered only to us.

I wrote a letter to Sebastian. I did not sign it. I did not give him our location. I simply wrote:

*Your daughter is alive. She knows the truth. She will meet you at Grace’s lake house at noon on Friday. Come alone. If you bring anyone — she vanishes forever.*

I sent it through a trusted courier, untraceable, to his private office.

We waited.

On Thursday evening, the reply came. A single line, written in bold, angry handwriting:

*I will come. But know this — if you are lying — no place on earth will hide you.*

The night before the meeting, Mia could not sleep. I found her sitting by the fireplace, holding Grace’s letter and the locket Vanessa had given her.

“Are you afraid?” I asked softly.

Mia thought for a moment. “I am afraid of what he will say. I am afraid I will not be brave enough.”

I sat beside her. “Your mother was brave. Grace was brave. Vanessa was brave enough to help you. And you — you are braver than all of them put together.”

Mia leaned her head on my shoulder. “I wish Grace were here. I wish she could tell me what to do.”

“Grace already told you,” I said. “She told you to choose. And she told you — whatever you choose — she loves you.”

Mia was quiet for a long time. Then she reached into her pocket and pulled out something else. A small, folded piece of paper.

“I found this in the journal,” she said. “The page that was torn out. It was tucked inside the back cover. I think Grace hid it there on purpose.”

I unfolded it. It was the missing final page. Written in Grace’s hand.

*To my dearest Mia,*

*If you are reading this, you are standing face-to-face with the man who killed your mother. When he speaks — listen carefully. When he lies — remember the truth. And when he offers you love — remember that he killed the only woman who truly loved him.*

*But remember this too: Sebastian is not just a killer. He is a man who lost his way. He loved your mother once. He loved her deeply. That is why he could not bear that she had given him a daughter instead of a son. That is why he destroyed what he could not control.*

*Do not become like him. Do not let hate turn you into something you are not. You have Lila’s heart. Elena’s courage. And my protection. Use it wisely.*

*When the moment comes — you will have the power to destroy him completely. You will have the power to take everything he owns. But I ask you — consider mercy. Justice does not always mean destruction. Sometimes it means walking away.*

*I love you, my brave girl. Be strong. And be kind.*

*Grace*

I folded the paper carefully and handed it back to Mia. She read it slowly, every word. Then she folded it and placed it inside the locket, beside Vanessa’s note.

“Grace knew,” Mia said. “She knew I would have to choose between justice and mercy.”

“Yes.”

“And she wanted me to be kind.”

“Because she believes in you.”

Mia stood up and looked toward the window. The moon was setting. Dawn was coming.

“Tomorrow,” she said, “I will ask him why. And then — I will decide.”
