Chapter 12 - THE CHOICE

I stared at the number written in Vanessa’s handwriting.

“She gave you this?” I asked.

“She said I could call him,” Mia said. “Or I could destroy him. Whichever I chose. She said — it is my birthright.”

Elena stepped forward, alarm in her voice. “Mia, we cannot call him. If he knows where we are —”

“He already knows we exist,” Mia said simply. “He just doesn’t know who I am. Or where to find me. But if we hide — he will still hunt us. He will still send people. He will never stop until I am dead.”

Mia looked up at me, her eyes clear and steady.

“Daddy — Grace said I should choose. And I choose to face him. Not now. Not tomorrow. But soon. When I am ready. Until then — we prepare. We gather the evidence. We make sure he cannot hurt us. And when the day comes — I will look him in the eye. And I will ask him why.”

I knelt before her. “You are extraordinary, Mia. But you are also a child. This is not your burden to carry.”

“It is my burden,” she said. “Because it is my life. My mother. My choice.”

I looked at Elena. She looked back at me. We both knew Mia was right. Running would not solve anything. Sebastian Halewood had unlimited resources. He had time. He had people everywhere. He would hunt us until he found us — or until we stood and faced him.

“Very well,” I said. “We prepare. We gather everything Grace left behind. We build a case strong enough to destroy him. And when you are ready — we go to him. Together.”

Mia smiled — a small, sad smile. “Together.”

Over the next two weeks, we worked in secret. Elena and I went to the city archives and retrieved the safety deposit box. Inside, we found everything Grace had promised — documents, photographs, witness statements, bank records, and a sealed envelope addressed to Mia, to be opened only when she stood face-to-face with Sebastian.

We copied everything. We backed up every file. We sent copies to three different trusted lawyers in three different countries. If anything happened to us — the truth would be released.

Vanessa remained missing. We heard nothing more from her. No texts. No calls. No sightings. I did not know if she was alive or dead. But I prayed she was safe.

Evelyn remained in custody. She refused to speak to anyone. She refused to eat. She refused to acknowledge anyone. She sat in her cell, staring at the wall, whispering Sebastian’s name. As if he would come for her. As if he would save her.

Then one morning, the news broke.

Sebastian Halewood had returned to the country. He had arrived late the previous night. And he had given an interview.

He spoke of his late wife. Of his lost daughter. Of his grief. He spoke of how much he had missed them. How he had searched for years. How he had never stopped hoping.

He looked directly into the camera and said: “If my daughter is alive — if anyone knows where she is — tell her her father has been waiting for her. Tell her I will give her everything. I will make amends. I will love her.”

Mia watched the interview with us. She did not cry. She did not speak. She simply watched him — his face, his eyes, the way he spoke — and when it was over, she stood up and walked to the window.

“He is lying,” she said quietly. “He killed my mother. And now he pretends to grieve.”

“Yes,” Elena said. “He is lying. But the world believes him.”

“Then let the world believe what it wants,” Mia said. “I know the truth. And so does he.”

She turned back to us, her face calm and resolute.

“I am ready,” she said. “Take me to him.”
