Chapter 17 - THE ALLIANCEWe brought Julian back to the estate before dusk. He walked through the house with quiet awe, his eyes lingering on the photos of Grace and Lila along the hallway walls. When he paused before a portrait of Lila, he reached out and touched the frame with trembling fingers.

“She looks like you,” he said to Mia. “Same eyes. Same mouth.”

Mia stood beside him. “You look like her too. Just a little.”

That evening around the fireplace, Julian laid out the full picture. Sebastian Halewood had built a sprawling network of companies, many of them shells used to hide money, influence — and worse. His marriage had been purely political; his wife knew nothing of Lila, nothing of Julian, nothing of Mia.

“Evelyn helped him cover it all,” Julian said. “She managed the paperwork, silenced threats, kept his secrets. That’s why he protected her for so long. That’s why she felt untouchable.”

“And Vanessa?” Elena asked.

“Vanessa found pieces of the truth before she ran,” Julian said. “She knew Sebastian had another heir. She just didn’t know it was me. That’s why she left — she realized she’d been playing for the wrong side all along.”

He turned a page in the binder.

“Sebastian plans to freeze all Halewood assets within forty-eight hours,” he said. “To ‘protect’ them — so no one can touch what he claims belongs to Mia. Once that happens, he controls everything. And he’ll never hand it over.”

“Grace anticipated that too,” I said. “In the safety deposit box — she left a provision. If Sebastian acts against Mia, his entire estate passes to her immediately. But we need proof of her identity to make it stand.”

Julian tapped the binder.

“Then we give them proof,” he said. “My testimony. My mother’s letters. Grace’s records. And one more thing — Grace told me she kept a copy of Sebastian’s own confession, written to her years ago. He admitted everything. Lila. Me. The murder. Everything.”

“Where is it?” Elena asked.

“Buried inside the Halewood family vault,” Julian said. “Locked away. Accessible only by blood — or by someone who carries both his children’s authority.”

He looked between Mia and me.

“We go together. Both of us. As his heirs. We demand entry. And we take what is ours.”

“It’s a trap,” I said. “He’ll be waiting.”

“Let him wait,” Mia said. “He’s already declared war. We either fight him on his ground — or we spend the rest of our lives running.”

Elena looked from Mia to Julian, then back to me.

“Grace chose them well,” she said quietly. “Brave. Stubborn. And entirely too much like their mothers.”

She straightened.

“Then we prepare. David coordinates the lawyers and independent witnesses. We go in at first light. We stay together. And if anything goes wrong — we walk out. No proof is worth losing both of you.”

Mia reached across the table and placed her hand over Julian’s.

“Together,” she said.

May you like

Julian nodded.

“Together.”
