Chapter 19

Sophie used part of her trust for college.
Part for the Safe Door Fund.
Part she kept untouched because Megan taught her generosity needs boundaries.
Before she left for school, she asked to visit the old house.
It had become a counseling center through the foundation.
The kitchen had yellow curtains.
The pantry door was gone.
The closet held art supplies.
Sophie stood in the hallway for a long time.
“You okay?” I asked.
“Yes.”
“You sure?”
She nodded.
“I used to think this was where I became scared.”
I waited.
“Now it’s where you found me.”
My eyes burned.
“I should have found you sooner.”
She took my hand.
“But you found me.”
She walked to the open closet and placed a box of crayons on the shelf.
“For the next kid.”
Megan cried.
I cried.
Sophie smiled at us.
“You two are embarrassing.”
“Yes,” I said. “Proudly.”
Outside, sunlight covered the porch.
Rachel was gone from our lives.
Patricia too.
My mother remained careful and kind.
Laura’s memory no longer felt like grief alone.
It felt like guidance.
Sophie looked back at the house.
May you like
“Ready,” she said.
And we left without looking back again.
