Chapter 12

The verdict came after nine hours.

Guilty.

Child abuse.

False imprisonment.

Conspiracy.

Attempted fraud.

Evidence fabrication.

Rachel cried when the first count was read.

By the last, she looked empty.

At sentencing, I spoke.

“My daughter was five years old,” I said. “She needed love. She needed patience. She needed the adults around her to protect her grief.”

Rachel would not look at me.

“You dragged her by the hair. You locked her in the dark. You told her her dead mother left because she was bad. Then you tried to use her fear to steal from her future.”

My voice broke.

“I brought you into our home. That failure is mine. The cruelty was yours.”

Megan spoke for Laura’s family.

She read one line from Laura’s letter.

Do not let anyone teach Sophie that love must be earned by obedience.

The judge sentenced Rachel to prison.

Patricia received probation and restitution because she cooperated.

Both were barred from contacting Sophie.

When I told Sophie Rachel was not coming back, she asked, “Even if she says sorry?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

Then she curled into my lap.

No bargaining.

No fear of punishment.

Just my child, finally allowed to rest.
