Chapter 15

Years passed in small repairs.

Sophie learned to sleep with the light off.

Then on again.

Then off.

Healing was not a straight road.

It was a hallway where some doors stayed open.

She stopped asking if I believed her.

That was the milestone I never announced.

One day, she simply told me something hard and expected me to listen.

And I did.

Laura’s trust stayed protected.

Megan became co-trustee with me.

That was my idea.

She resisted.

I insisted.

“Sophie deserves more than one adult guarding her future.”

Megan nodded.

“Laura would like that.”

We started using part of the trust income for therapy and education.

Not for me.

Never for me.

Sophie began piano.

Then soccer.

Then art.

She painted yellow doors over and over.

At eight, she asked why.

“I think doors should be happy.”

I framed one.

Rachel appealed and lost.

Patricia moved away.

My mother kept writing.

Eventually, Sophie agreed to a supervised meeting in Dr. Lane’s office.

My mother cried.

Sophie said, “Don’t cry so I have to hug you.”

My mother wiped her face.

“You’re right. I’m sorry.”

Sophie nodded.

May you like

It was not forgiveness.

It was a beginning.
