Chapter 10

The trial began eight months later.

Sophie was six by then.

She stayed home with Margaret and Mrs. Bell.

I would not let her sit in a courtroom while adults dissected her pain.

I sat beside Megan.

Nora sat with the prosecutor.

Rachel entered wearing pale blue, her hair soft around her face.

She looked fragile.

She looked innocent.

Then the videos played.

The kitchen.

The closet.

The staged crying.

Rachel’s voice filled the courtroom.

“No one believes bad girls.”

I heard people gasp.

I kept my eyes open.

I owed Sophie that much.

When I testified, Rachel stared at me like I had ruined her life.

The prosecutor asked, “Did Sophie ever try to tell you?”

I swallowed.

“Yes.”

“What did she say?”

“She said she did not like Rachel’s games. She asked to come to work with me. She cried when I left.”

“What did you do?”

“I explained it away.”

My shame filled the room.

“Why admit that?”

“Because my daughter should never have to carry my pride.”

Rachel’s lawyer attacked me.

“You struck your wife.”

“Yes.”

“You dragged her by the hair.”

“Yes.”

“So you are violent too.”

I looked at the jury.

May you like

“I was wrong. I reported myself. But one wrong act in panic does not erase months of planned abuse against a child.”

The room went still.
