Chapter 17

Rachel was released when Sophie was sixteen.

We knew months before.

The protective order remained.

Dr. Lane helped us prepare.

School security was notified.

Neighbors were told.

Sophie rolled her eyes but thanked me later.

Rachel violated the order within three weeks.

She created a fake social media account and sent Sophie one message.

I loved you more than your father let me.

Sophie showed me immediately.

Her hands did not shake.

Mine did.

“She still lies,” Sophie said.

“Yes.”

“What happens now?”

“We send it to Nora.”

Rachel went back before a judge.

Her restrictions tightened.

She cried in court.

She said she needed closure.

Sophie submitted a written statement.

Closure does not belong to the person who hurt the child.

The judge read it aloud.

Rachel went pale.

My daughter’s words had become stronger than Rachel’s manipulation.

After the hearing, Sophie asked if I was proud.

“Yes.”

“Because I was brave?”

“Because you trusted yourself.”

She smiled.

“I learned that here.”

Here.

Not from fear.

Not from court.

May you like

From home.

That was the victory I had wanted without knowing its name.
