Chapter 1

The crash from the kitchen made me run.
Then Sophie screamed.
“Daddy!”
I turned the corner and froze.
For one horrible second, my brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.
Rachel had my five-year-old daughter by the hair.
Sophie was on the floor, sobbing, trying to crawl away while my wife dragged her across the tile.
“Rachel!”
My voice cracked like thunder.
Rachel froze.
Her fingers opened.
Sophie scrambled toward me on her hands and knees.
“Daddy, please don’t leave me again.”
Those words cut deeper than anything I had ever heard.
I lifted her into my arms.
Her little body shook against mine.
Her scalp was red.
Several strands of hair clung to Rachel’s fingers.
I stared at them.
Rachel pointed at Sophie.
“She threw another tantrum.”
“A tantrum?”
My hands started shaking.
“You dragged a five-year-old across the kitchen floor.”
Rachel rolled her eyes.
“You have no idea what I deal with when you’re at work.”
Sophie buried her face in my shoulder.
“She does worse when you’re gone.”
Rachel’s face changed.
“Stop lying!”
She stepped forward and grabbed Sophie’s arm.
I knocked her hand away.
“Don’t touch her.”
Rachel slapped me across the face.
The sound echoed through the kitchen.
Then she reached for Sophie again.
I placed my daughter on the couch behind me and turned back.
Rachel raised her hand.
I caught her wrist.
Then I slapped her.
She stumbled into the counter.
“You hit me!” she screamed.
“You’ve been hurting my daughter.”
Rachel lunged toward Sophie.
Something inside me snapped.
I grabbed Rachel by the hair and pulled her across the same kitchen floor where she had dragged my child.
“Daniel! Let me go!”
“Sophie begged you too.”
I dragged her to the front door and threw her onto the porch.
She tried to force her way back inside.
I shoved her away and locked the door.
“You will never touch my daughter again.”
Rachel screamed and pounded on the glass.
I called 911 with one hand and held Sophie with the other.
Minutes later, two police officers arrived.
Rachel tried to run across the yard.
They caught her before she reached the gate.
Sophie watched from my arms as Rachel was placed in the patrol car.
Then she looked up at me with wet eyes.
“Daddy… do you believe me now?”
I kissed her forehead.
“I believe you.”
May you like
My voice broke.
“And I will never leave you alone with her again.”
