Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE DOCUMENTAmanda's earlier discovery about the deed turned out to be more important than I realized.

Four years earlier, Linda transferred the property to Jason and me.

I vaguely remembered signing refinancing paperwork around then.

Jason told me it was routine.

Buried among the pages had been the deed.

Joint ownership.

Why transfer?

Tax planning, apparently.

Linda's accountant recommended moving the house out of her trust after Jason reimbursed her for part of the purchase years earlier.

Then, eighteen months later, a quitclaim deed appeared removing my name and returning sole ownership to Jason.

My signature appeared.

Not notarized properly.

The notary stamp belonged to someone named Karen Bell.

Amanda located her.

Karen had never met me.

Her stamp had not been stolen.

The signature page was fake.

Karen's notary number was copied from another public document.

Who filed it?

The mailing address belonged to Linda's accountant.

He denied preparing it.

Then produced emails.

Linda had asked him:

If Rachel leaves Jason, can she take half the house?

He replied:

Speak with family counsel. Current joint deed gives her significant ownership rights.

Three weeks later the forged deed was recorded.

Linda knew.

Jason knew.

Someone decided not to negotiate.

They rewrote reality.

I stared at the deed.

“Can we reverse it?”

“Likely.”

Amanda said.

“Court decides.”

Again.

Process.

The house became temporarily frozen from sale or refinancing.

Jason's plan to claim sole control failed.

Then financial discovery uncovered a home-equity line.

$280,000.

Opened after the forged deed.

Jason as sole borrower.

Where did the money go?

$85,000 to pay credit-card debt.

$60,000 into an investment account.

$40,000 to Gregory Sloan's trust account.

Legal preparation.

$24,000 to Thomas Reed's firm.

And $31,000 to Linda.

The rest scattered.

He had borrowed against a house partially mine after erasing me on paper.

My anger became colder.

This wasn't a mother-in-law problem anymore.

Linda's towel was theater.

The financial plan had been running for years.
