Chapter 4 - The Offshore Signal

By nine-fifteen, thirty minutes had passed since the doors had sealed. The air inside the ballroom remained cool and clear, sustained by an industrial air-filtration system humming quietly through high wall vents.

The four hundred guests had clustered into small, frightened groups near the banquet tables, murmuring in anxious whispers as they watched Marcus Reed standing near the center of the room.

Claire sat on a plush velvet chair near a champagne station, her missing heel forgotten as she nursed a cup of mineral water. Marcus stood two feet away, his steel-blue eyes never relaxing, his broad posture commanding absolute territory.

Preston leaned against a marble pillar fifty feet away, holding a cloth napkin against his bleeding lip, his tailored navy linen suit stained with spilled wine.

Preston: "Sheriff... do something! You’re an officer of the county!"

Sheriff Pike paced back and forth near the sealed entrance, his heavy face wet with sweat beneath his dark hair.

Sheriff Pike: "I can't shoot through a titanium blast door, Preston! And if I fire a weapon in an enclosed space with four hundred civilians, we’ve got a secondary riot on our hands!"

Vivienne walked over to Preston, her voice dropping into a harsh, frantic whisper.

Vivienne: "Shut your mouth, Preston. If he has the black card, it means the federal audit in New York didn't fail."

Preston looked at his mother, his pale-blue eyes widening with sudden, genuine fear.

Preston: "What audit? You said the offshore accounts were completely clean!"

Vivienne grabbed his forearm, her sapphire rings digging into his navy jacket sleeve.

Vivienne: "The offshore accounts were clean until your father died! But the secondary trust requires a living trustee’s biometric verification every five years!"

Marcus’s ears caught the quiet exchange across the room. He reached into his field jacket, pulling out a small folding tablet and opening its encrypted display.

A series of red financial ledgers began streaming rapidly across the screen, updating in real time.

Marcus: "Five minutes ago, Vivienne. The Zurich central node just rejected the biometric submission sent from this building at eight-forty PM."

Vivienne’s chest rose and fell sharply beneath her emerald dress.

Vivienne: "That’s impossible... the submission was signed by the trustee!"

Marcus held up the tablet display so she could see the glowing red text.

Marcus: "The submission was signed with your late husband’s stolen private key. But the system didn't flag the key... it flagged the location."
