Chapter 2 - The Red Light Silence

The heavy silence inside the sealed ballroom was deafening, broken only by the low hum of the red emergency lighting system. Four hundred guests in tuxedos and evening gowns stood frozen against the marble walls, their champagne glasses held motionless as they stared at the rugged man standing beside the emergency panel.
Sheriff Raymond Pike stood at the primary double doors, his heavy hand still hovering over his empty holster. The shattered pieces of his crystal champagne glass glinted red against the cream marble floor beneath his boots.
Sheriff Pike: "Reed... you’re interfering with a local law enforcement jurisdiction. I don't give a damn what kind of private security pass you’re holding."
Marcus didn't turn his head. He remained crouched beside Claire, gently helping her stand up on the marble floor. He placed his olive field jacket over her delicate, bare shoulders, wrapping the warm cotton around her shivering frame.
Marcus: "You stopped being law enforcement the moment you took twenty thousand dollars a month from Vivienne Beaumont, Raymond."
Sheriff Pike’s jaw tightened beneath his thick dark mustache, his face flushing crimson under the emergency lights.
Vivienne stepped forward, her emerald couture cocktail dress rustling against the marble, her sapphire necklace catching the deep-red glow.
Vivienne: "This is a private estate, Marcus! My late husband built this club forty years ago! You have no legal standing to lock these doors!"
Marcus stood up slowly, his broad shoulders casting a long shadow across the marble floor. He reached into his dark denim jeans, pulling out a small encrypted satellite receiver no larger than a deck of cards.
Marcus: "Your late husband didn't build this club with personal wealth, Vivienne. He built it with six hundred million dollars transferred from the Department of Defense logistics slush fund in 1994."
Vivienne stopped dead in her tracks, her sapphire-ringed hand freezing in mid-air.
Beside the ruined banquet table, Preston pushed himself up off the floor, wiping a streak of dark blood from his split lip with his sleeve. His pale-blue eyes flicked nervously from the matte-black card in Marcus’s hand to the heavy iron doors sealed around the perimeter.
Preston: "Mother... what is he talking about?"

Before Vivienne could respond, the red emergency lights flickered three times.
From deep within the subterranean levels beneath the ballroom floor, a heavy, rhythmic mechanical thrumming began—a massive hydraulic generator engaging its secondary coils far below the marble foundation.
