Chapter 34 - The Final Countermeasure

Julian Vance stared at his dead smartwatch in absolute shock. The smug, arrogant composure that had defined his posture collapsed instantly, replaced by a desperate, wild fury.

He lunged toward the central console keyboard to manually execute the upload command.

Before his fingers could touch the keys, Marcus closed the distance in a fraction of a second, grabbing Julian’s wrist with a grip like iron, slamming him face-down onto the mahogany desk, and securing his arms behind his back with high-tensile plastic restraints.

Leo rushed to the central terminal. The red countdown timer was still ticking down rapid seconds: 01 MINUTE 08 SECONDS.

"Claire!" Leo spoke rapidly into his headset mic. "I have local access to the master server terminal in the bunker, but the upload code is locked behind an executive triple-key encryption loop! I need your override access from the power gantry!"

"Connecting now, Leo!" Claire’s voice answered instantly in his ear. "I’ve bypassed their firewall through the generator’s diagnostic port! You should see a secondary input prompt on your screen now!"

A bright green terminal window opened on Leo’s display: ENTER MASTER EXECUTION CODE.

Leo looked down at Julian Vance, who was struggling against his restraints on the desk. "What's the master code, Julian?"

Julian spat a mouthful of blood onto the desk, laughing hysterically. "You think I'm going to give it to you? In sixty seconds, Sarah Vance’s real name, her address in Switzerland, and the entire history of what Marcus did in 1988 goes live to three hundred media servers! You can't stop the upload without the master key!"

Marcus leaned down, his face inches from Julian’s ear, his voice dropping into a whisper that sounded like grinding steel. "We don't need your master key, Julian. Because Sarah Vance isn't in Switzerland."

Julian stopped struggling, his eyes widening in complete confusion. "What?"

"Sarah Vance passed away six years ago in Maine," Marcus said quietly, a profound, solemn truth filling his voice. "She lived a peaceful, honorable life under a protected identity, surrounded by people who cared for her. The address you found in Switzerland was a honeypot trap I set up twenty years ago specifically for anyone in your family who came looking to use her."

Julian’s face went completely pale. "You... you lied to the network?"

"I protected a human being from a monster," Marcus said simply.

On the screen, the timer hit twenty seconds. 00:20... 00:19...

"Leo!" Claire shouted through the comms. "The upload string is drawing power from the secondary emergency battery bank under the floor! Cut the physical fiber trunk!"

Leo didn't waste time typing complex decryption algorithms. He pulled his tactical dive knife from his sheath, reached under the main server rack, and slashed through the bundle of thick, blue fiber-optic cables feeding into the wall terminal.

Bright sparks flew as the glass fibers snapped.

The computer monitor screen instantly went black, replaced by a simple system error message: CRITICAL HARDWARE DISCONNECT. UPLOAD TERMINATED.

Down in the quarry cavern, the heavy thud of tactical boots echoed along the concrete docks as federal tactical teams, led by United States Coast Guard officers and Federal Marshals, poured into the complex through the upper access tunnels.

Bright searchlights swept across the water, blinding the remaining Vance security contractors, who immediately raised their hands in total surrender.

Director Helen Vance—wearing a dark coat, accompanied by four armed federal agents—stepped into the upper administrative bunker. She looked at Julian Vance bound on the desk, then at the severed fiber-optic cables on the floor, and finally at Marcus and Leo Reed.

"I see you handled the situation before the tactical team could breach the perimeter, Marcus," Director Vance said, her sharp voice carrying a faint trace of relief.

"My son handled it, Director," Marcus said, placing his hand firmly on Leo’s shoulder. "Julian Vance’s network is completely destroyed. Every server in this facility is isolated."

Director Vance looked at Leo, her sharp eyes filled with genuine respect. "Seventeen years old, Leo. You've now dismantled two generations of the most dangerous shadow network in modern history."

Leo wiped a streak of grease from his cheek, looking at his father, then out the bunker window toward the quarry cavern where Claire was walking up the gantry stairs with a smile on her face.

"I had good teachers, Director," Leo said softly.
