Chapter 15 - The Threshold of Sixteen

Four years later, the golden light of late summer bathed the rocky coastline of Bar Harbor, Maine, on a magnificent afternoon.

A modest family celebration was taking place on the wide wooden porch of the cedar-shingle house. White flower arrangements decorated the railings, and a small birthday cake with sixteen glowing candles sat on a rustic pine table.

Sixteen-year-old Leo Reed—Claire’s younger brother, born during the quiet years after the Greenwich trial—sat on the porch steps, looking extraordinarily handsome, tall, and athletic, with dark hair, a strong jaw, and piercing steel-blue eyes that mirrored his father’s. He wore a simple dark blue shirt and jeans, holding a small tactical compass in his hands.

Claire stood near the porch railing, looking breathtaking in a simple summer dress, her hazel eyes filled with deep happiness as she watched her younger brother.

Marcus, now sixty-seven, stood near the edge of the bluff overlooking the ocean, his swept-back silver hair catching the coastal breeze, his posture still broad, powerful, and commanding.

A high-speed military helicopter bearing no national markings descended quietly from the northern clouds, its black rotors spinning softly as it hovered two hundred feet above the blue ocean water out in the bay.

A small waterproof tactical container was dropped from the bay door, splashing into the waves before bobbing to the surface with a bright yellow marker buoy.

Marcus walked down to the rocky shore, retrieving the waterproof container from the shallow tide using a long boat hook, carrying it up to the wooden porch table.

He unclasped the four heavy steel latches of the container, opening the lid.

Resting inside on black foam was a heavy brass key, an encrypted satellite device, and an official document bearing a raised gold seal.

Text on document: "NATIONAL COMMAND AUTHORITY — ARCHIVE TRANSFER DIRECTIVE #10-99. DESIGNATED SUCCESSOR: REED, LEO MARCUS."

Leo stood up from the porch steps, walking over to the table, his young steel-blue eyes staring at the brass key resting inside the foam.

Leo: "Dad... what is this?"

Marcus picked up the heavy brass key, placing it gently into his sixteen-year-old son’s palm, his voice deep, calm, and filled with unshakeable authority.

Marcus: "That key unlocks the primary archive vault built beneath the lighthouse on Monhegan Island, Leo. It’s been waiting for a Reed man to turn sixteen since 1991."

Leo looked up from the brass key to meet his father’s eyes, the ocean wind blowing through his dark hair as the black helicopter turned away toward the northern horizon.

Leo: "What’s inside the vault, Dad?"

Marcus smiled faintly—a warm, fearless expression that held forty years of unspoken history.

Marcus: "Whenever you’re ready, son... we’ll take the boat out and find out together."
