Chapter 1 - The Glass Ballroom Slam

The Beaumont Private Country Club was an institution built on forty acres of manicured estate grounds in the coastal enclave of Greenwich, Connecticut. Its Grand Easter Ballroom was a vision of wealth—cream marble floors, towering crystal chandeliers, champagne stations pouring vintage Krug, and white-and-gold floral arrangements decorating the perimeter.

Inside the packed ballroom, four hundred elite guests in black-tie attire stood along the edges of the marble floor.

Preston Beaumont, forty-two, an exceptionally handsome wealthy blond man with a tall athletic build, pale-blue eyes, and a polished Hollywood appearance, wore a tailored navy linen suit and an open white shirt with a platinum watch. His face was twisted in an expression of entitled rage as he gripped thirty-three-year-old Claire Beaumont by her long chestnut hair, dragging her violently across the marble floor between two banquet tables.

Claire, a breathtaking brunette with large hazel eyes and delicate features, wore a lavender Easter dress with one heel missing, her skin pale, her breathing ragged.

Guests recoiled in silence, sipping their champagne, lowering their eyes. Nobody moved. Nobody intervened.

BANG—

The double reinforced ballroom doors swung open with heavy force.

Marcus Reed stepped onto the cream marble. Sixty-three years old, Marcus was a strikingly handsome older man with broad, powerful shoulders, swept-back silver hair, rugged weathered features, piercing steel-blue eyes, and an immaculate gray beard. He wore a faded olive field jacket over a fitted black henley, dark denim, and worn brown boots.

His gaze locked onto Claire lying on the marble floor.

Marcus’s expression went completely cold.

Vivienne Beaumont, sixty-six, the glamorous silver-blonde matriarch of the family, wearing an emerald couture cocktail dress, sapphire jewelry, and black heels, stepped forward and shoved Marcus’s chest with her manicured hand.

Vivienne: "Walk away. She’s pulling her little victim act again."

Marcus knocked her hand aside with a single effortless flick of his forearm, sweeping past her and dropping to his knees beside Claire.

Preston laughed maliciously, kicking Claire’s cracked smartphone across the polished marble, where it skidded against the base of a champagne tower.

Preston, laughing: "Go ahead, old man. Call somebody who gives a damn."

Preston swung first, throwing a heavy right hook straight at Marcus’s jaw.

Marcus blocked the fist mid-air with his left palm, redirected the momentum, and fired one hard, devastating punch straight across Preston’s mouth.

Preston’s head snapped back as he crashed directly into a banquet table, sending crystal glasses, silver ice buckets, and champagne bottles shattering across the floor.

CRASH.

Claire grabbed the collar of Marcus’s field jacket, her fingers trembling against the rugged cotton.

Claire: "Dad... please don’t make me stay here."

Marcus rose to his feet, positioning his broad body squarely between Claire and the gathering crowd.

He reached inside the lapel of his olive field jacket, pulling out a matte-black authentication card.

Sheriff Raymond Pike, fifty-five, an imposing sheriff with a heavy build and a thick dark mustache, holding a champagne glass, approached confidently while Vivienne pointed an accusing finger at Marcus.

Marcus turned toward the wall-mounted emergency security panel near the double doors.

He pressed the matte-black card against the digital scanner.

Marcus, ice-cold: "Black Code. Seal the building. Now."

BANG!

Every reinforced steel ballroom door slammed shut simultaneously.

Heavy mechanical locks engaged with loud pneumatic thuds.

The ballroom music died instantly.

Deep-red emergency light flooded the entire ballroom, painting the marble and crystal in crimson tones.

Sheriff Pike rushed to the main doors, yanking desperately on the heavy brass handle.

LOCKED.

Pike’s hand went limp. His champagne glass slipped from his fingers, falling to the marble floor.

SHATTERS.

Vivienne’s arrogant smile vanished as her face went completely pale.

Preston touched his split lip, his hand trembling slightly, suddenly silent.

In an extreme macro view, Marcus removed the black card from the panel.

For the first time, its reverse side became visible: a gold federal eagle embossed above Marcus’s photograph, accompanied by one unmistakable designation stamped in white letters:

NATIONAL COMMAND AUTHORITY.

Preston saw the gold eagle, and his entire body went rigid. His pale-blue eyes slowly lifted from the card to meet Marcus’s face.

Marcus calmly rolled up his left sleeve, revealing a solid black tactical chronograph.

Marcus: "Still think nobody’s coming?"

Preston’s confidence disappeared completely.

Behind him, multiple secondary security locks engaged in rapid succession along the iron perimeter doors.

In an extreme close-up, Marcus’s steel-blue eyes remained deadpan, unyielding, and utterly fearless.
