Chapter 20 - The Greenwich Alignment

Forty-eight hours after the operation on Monhegan Island, the golden sunlight of early autumn illuminated the pristine estate grounds of Greenwich, Connecticut.

Inside the glass-walled library of the Carter-Reed residence, a quiet, stately calm had returned. Floor-to-ceiling windows offered views of the manicured lawns rolling down toward the blue waters of Long Island Sound.

Claire Reed sat at a large mahogany desk, her hazel eyes scanning a series of unsealed federal court documents displayed on her tablet. Opposite her sat Director Vance, wearing a sharp gray suit, sipping black tea from a fine china cup.

Marcus stood near the fireplace, his broad shoulders relaxed, while Leo sat near the window, holding the antique brass key that had unlocked the Monhegan vault.

"The Panama syndicate has been completely liquidated," Director Vance reported, setting her teacup down with a soft click. "Federal marshals in Miami and Zurich seized eleven secondary holding companies yesterday afternoon. The ledger Leo recovered from the vault provided the exact chain of custody needed to dismantle the remaining network."

Claire looked up from her screen, her expression warm yet analytical. "And the names of the twenty-four officials listed in the 1991 directive?"

"They have been submitted to a closed-door Congressional ethics committee," Vance explained. "Because the dissolution protocol was legally executed by a verified civilian heir on his sixteenth birthday, those individuals cannot claim military immunity or executive privilege. It’s a total legal checkmate."

Vance turned her head to look directly at Leo. "You handled yourself with extraordinary discipline on that island, Leo. Your father spent thirty years protecting this country’s deepest secrets, but you closed the loop in forty-eight hours."

Leo looked down at the brass key in his hand. "My father taught me that a key is only as valuable as the truth it protects, Director."

"Where will the key go now?" Claire asked, looking between her father and brother.

"It stays here," Marcus said, walking over to the mahogany desk and placing his hand on Leo’s shoulder. "Not as a secret to be hidden in a vault, but as a reminder that the Reed family doesn't carry debts from the past anymore."

Director Vance stood up, adjusting her jacket, and offered her hand to Leo. "Thank you, Mr. Reed. You've rendered a great service to this nation."

Leo shook her hand with a firm, confident grip. "Just doing what my family does, Director."

After Director Vance was escorted out by the estate security team, Claire walked over to her brother and wrapped her arms around his shoulders in a tight, affectionate hug. "Sixteen years old and already taking down international syndicates. You're making it hard for your big sister to keep up."

Leo laughed softly, his steel-blue eyes sparkling with genuine happiness. "You did all the heavy lifting four years ago in Westport, Claire. I just slid down a cable."

Marcus stood by the window, watching the calm blue waters of the Sound stretching out beneath the autumn sky. The long, dangerous shadows that had hovered over his life since 1991 had finally dissolved into clear, unquestionable light.

"What's next, Dad?" Leo asked, walking up to stand beside his father.

Marcus put his arm around his son’s shoulders, looking out at the horizon. "Next, Leo... we go back to Bar Harbor, we finish your birthday cake, and we take the boat out just for the fun of it."
