Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Trap

The private dining room at The St. Regis Houston was bathed in soft, elegant lighting. Victor Cross, a burly, silver-haired man in an expensive bespoke suit, sat nervously at the long oak table, repeatedly checking his gold watch.
For twenty years, Victor had built his import empire in Austin, but his company’s entire supply chain relied heavily on Sterling Crest’s global shipping network. When the contract was abruptly canceled three days ago, his business began bleeding hundreds of thousands of dollars an hour.
The double doors opened, and Claire Sterling walked in, flanked by Daniel and Nathan Brooks. She exuded an aura of absolute power and effortless sophistication.
Victor immediately stood up, offering a polite bow. "Madam President Sterling. Thank you for agreeing to meet with me on such short notice."
"Please, sit, Mr. Cross," Claire said calmly, taking her seat at the head of the table. "I know why you're here. You want to know why Sterling Crest terminated your primary logistics contract."
Victor leaned forward, his hands trembling slightly. "Madam President, our partnership has been prosperous for five years. My team was told the termination came directly from your office. If there was a breach of protocol, I assure you I will fix it immediately."
Claire took a slow sip of her water, holding Victor's gaze. "The breach was not in your operations, Mr. Cross. The breach was personal."
Victor frowned, thoroughly confused. "Personal? I don't understand."
Claire nodded to Daniel, who slid an iPad across the table toward Victor. On the screen was a crisp photograph taken four days ago at the River Oaks estate: Ethan, Margaret, and Chloe standing on the porch, mocking Claire in the pouring rain.
Victor looked at the photo, his brow furrowing. "That's my daughter, Chloe. And that man beside her is... Ethan Vance. Chloe told me he was a high-level executive at your company who was about to inherit his family's estate."
Claire let out a soft, musical laugh that made Victor’s spine tingle.
"Ethan Vance was a mid-level account manager making $85,000 a year," Claire revealed smoothly. "The 'estate' he lived in was my private home. The car he drove was registered to my corporation. And the woman he was married to for seven years... was me."
Victor’s mouth opened in utter shock. The color drained from his face as he looked from the screen to Claire. "He... he was married to YOU?"
"Until four days ago," Claire continued, her tone dropping to an icy edge. "When I returned from an executive trip, Ethan and his mother changed the locks on my house, handed me $2,500 as a 'severance package,' and told me his new pregnant girlfriend—your daughter—was moving in because she came from a 'family of real caliber.'"
Victor looked as though he had been hit by a freight train. His chest heaved as rage and humiliation boiled inside him. "My God... That lying, pathetic parasite..."
"Your daughter sat on my porch, Mr. Cross, and told me I was unfit to raise a family in my own house," Claire said, leaning in. "Now, ask yourself: why would Sterling Crest maintain a fifty-million-dollar business partnership with a family that tried to throw its President into the street?"
"Madam President, I had no idea!" Victor stammered desperately, standing up and bowing deeply. "I swear to you, I knew nothing about this! Chloe told me Ethan was a wealthy bachelor whose wife had abandoned him! If I had known—"
"I believe you didn't know, Mr. Cross," Claire interrupted, raising a hand. "Which is why I am giving you a choice."
Victor looked up, clutching at the lifeline. "Anything. Name it."
"Option one: you continue to support Ethan Vance, pay his legal fees, and let him drag your family name through the dirt when my legal team indicts him for embezzling half a million dollars from my company. In that option, your business goes bankrupt by the end of the month."
Victor swallowed hard, sweat dripping down his neck. "And... option two?"
"Option two: you force your daughter to sever all ties with Ethan Vance immediately, cut off his access to your family's funds, and allow my legal team to prosecute him without interference. Do that, and Sterling Crest will restore your shipping contract tomorrow morning."
May you like
Victor didn't hesitate for even a fraction of a second.
"Consider it done, Madam President," Victor said through gritted teeth, his eyes burning with fury toward Ethan Vance. "I will handle my daughter personally within the hour."
