Chapter 1 - The Cold Dawn of Reckoning

The rain had finally tapered off into a chilly, grey mist by 6:00 AM. The grand historic gates of the River Oaks estate glistened with moisture as the morning sun slowly peeked over the horizon. Inside the lavishly decorated master bedroom, Ethan stretched comfortably under the silk duvet. For the first time in years, he felt like a man who was truly in control of his destiny. Beside him lay Chloe, sleeping peacefully, her hand resting gently on her stomach.
Downstairs, Margaret was already bustling around the gourmet kitchen, humming a cheerful tune as she poured fresh orange juice into crystal highball glasses. She smoothed down her silk robe—the very robe Claire had gifted her—feeling an overwhelming sense of victory. She had never liked Claire. Claire was too quiet, too independent, and worst of all, she couldn't give Margaret the grandson she had been demanding for seven long years. Now, with Chloe—the daughter of an Austin business tycoon—Margaret felt her family had finally achieved the status they deserved.
"Good morning, Mother," Ethan said, stepping into the kitchen wearing a crisp white shirt and a smug smile. "How did you sleep?"
"Like a queen, my dear boy," Margaret beamed, handing him a glass. "That helpless woman must be sleeping in some cheap motel down the highway right now. $2,500 was far too generous for her, if you ask me."
Ethan chuckled, taking a sip. "It buys her silence for a few days until my lawyers file the divorce papers. Once Chloe’s father finalizes his investment in my firm, we won't ever have to think about Claire again."
Before Margaret could reply, a loud, metallic thud echoed from the front driveway, followed by the heavy rumble of multiple engines.
Margaret frowned, peering through the kitchen window. "Is the landscaping crew here already? It’s far too early."
Ethan walked to the front window and pulled back the heavy velvet curtains. His smug smile instantly vanished.
Parked along the circular driveway were four black SUVs, accompanied by a heavy-duty flatbed tow truck and a silver Mercedes van bearing a crest Ethan had seen only on high-end corporate documents. A dozen men in dark suits stepped out, led by a tall, stern man carrying a leather briefcase. Behind them stood two uniformed Harris County Sheriff deputies.
"What on earth is this?" Margaret gasped, rushing to Ethan's side. "Who are these people?"
Before Ethan could answer, the front door—the very door Margaret had re-keyed the night before—was struck with three sharp, authoritative knocks.
Ethan hurried to the entrance, pulling the door open with a scowl. "Can I help you? This is a private residence in River Oaks. You are trespassing!"
The man in the tailored suit stepped forward, completely unbothered by Ethan's aggressive tone. He pulled an official metal badge and a thick stack of legal documents from his jacket.
"Ethan Vance?" the man asked in a voice as cold as ice. "My name is Attorney Nathan Brooks, Chief Legal Counsel for Sterling Crest Group. And these are Officers Miller and Davis."
Ethan blinked, taken aback. "Sterling Crest? My wife works for a subsidiary of—"
"Your ex-wife is the sole owner and President of Sterling Crest Group," Nathan Brooks interrupted smoothly, holding up a certified land title document. "Including this real estate property, the land it sits on, and every piece of furniture, art, and fixture within it. As of 11:00 PM last night, your temporary residential permit was officially revoked."
Margaret pushed her way past Ethan, her face flushed red with anger. "What absurdity is this?! My son pays the mortgage here! This is HIS house! Get off our porch before I call the real police!"
Attorney Brooks offered a faint, razor-sharp smile. He handed a document directly to Deputy Miller.
"Ma'am, there is no mortgage," Brooks said, his voice echoing across the porch. "This property was purchased outright in cash eight years ago by Claire Sterling. Your son has been living here under a spousal tenancy agreement linked to his marriage. Furthermore, changing the locks on the property owner constitutes illegal entry and destruction of private property."
Deputy Miller stepped forward, resting a hand on his belt. "Sir, ma'am, you have exactly thirty minutes to gather your personal clothing and vacate the premises. Everything else in this house—including the artwork, the cars in the garage, and the electronics—is listed under Sterling Crest corporate assets."
Ethan felt the ground tilt beneath his feet. "Wait... what? Corporate assets? The BMW in the garage is MY car!"
Brooks pulled a laminated vehicle registration card from his file. "The vehicle is registered to Sterling Crest Group. As of midnight, your corporate credit lines have been frozen, and the vehicle has been reported as an unauthorized corporate possession. The tow truck behind me is here to repossess it."
From the top of the stairs, Chloe appeared, wrapped in a fluffy robe, her face pale as she looked down at the chaotic scene. "Ethan? What's going on? Who are these people?"
May you like
Margaret stood frozen, her eyes wide with sheer terror as she looked at Nathan Brooks, then at the deputies, and finally at her son. The reality of what they had done hit them like a tidal wave: they hadn't locked out a helpless, ordinary wife.
They had just declared war on the most powerful woman in the city.
