Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Illusion

Thirty minutes felt like thirty seconds in the pouring madness that consumed the house.
Ethan frantically threw his shirts into a canvas duffel bag while Margaret wept hysterical tears in the hallway, clutching a handful of designer dresses that Claire had bought for her over the years.
"You can't take those, ma'am," one of the private security guards said politely but firmly, taking the dresses from Margaret's trembling arms. "All items purchased using Sterling Crest corporate accounts remain the property of the corporation pending legal review."
"This is theft! This is elder abuse!" Margaret shrieked, her silk robe disheveled. "Ethan, do something! Call your boss! Call Chloe’s father!"
Ethan’s phone was ringing off the hook, vibrating wildly against the nightstand. He grabbed it, seeing the name of his regional manager, Richard.
"Richard!" Ethan stammered into the receiver, clutching his duffel bag. "Thank God you called! I need you to clarify something with HR right now—"
"Ethan, where the hell are you?" Richard’s voice was laced with pure venom. "Corporate security just raided our branch! All your system access has been terminated! Your corporate cards were declined, and headquarters just sent down an emergency audit team!"
Ethan’s heart dropped into his stomach. "What? Why?!"
"What did you do, Ethan?!" Richard barked. "Word just came down from the executive board! The President herself personally ordered your termination for grand embezzlement of corporate assets, unauthorized use of luxury property, and gross ethical violations! You’re ruined, Ethan! The whole company knows!"
The call went dead.
Ethan stared at his phone in absolute, paralyzing horror. Grand embezzlement? Unauthorized use?
Suddenly, the pieces connected in his mind with terrifying clarity. The quiet wife who always let him take credit for their luxurious lifestyle... the wife who never asked for expensive gifts... the wife whose corporate trips were always taken on private jets... She wasn't an ordinary mid-level manager. She was Claire Sterling. The absolute head of the empire.
"Ethan!" Chloe cried out from the hallway, dragging a small suitcase. "My dad just called me! He said his import business just lost its primary shipping contract with Sterling Crest Logistics! He’s furious! He asked me what kind of idiot I brought into the family!"
Ethan stumbled out into the grand foyer, his head spinning. Margaret was weeping on the bottom step, looking utterly defeated. The security guards were systematically tagging every piece of furniture, preparing to lock down the entire mansion.
At the front entrance, a sleek black sedan pulled up behind the police cruisers. The door opened, and a young man in a sharp grey suit stepped out, holding an umbrella. It was Daniel, Claire’s executive assistant.
Daniel walked up the steps with calm, measured grace. He stopped in front of Ethan, who looked like a ghost of the man he was twelve hours ago.
"Mr. Vance," Daniel said cleanly. "Madam President has instructed me to deliver a message to you."
Ethan swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "Daniel... please. Let me talk to Claire. This was all a misunderstanding! I didn't know—"
"You didn't know who you were married to," Daniel interrupted smoothly. "Madam President suggests you use the $2,500 you offered her last night to secure a room at a budget motel. Oh, and one more thing."
Daniel reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, black velvet box. He opened it, revealing the original wedding band Ethan had given Claire seven years ago—a cheap, silver ring she had cherished above all her expensive jewelry.
Daniel tossed the box carelessly onto the cold marble floor at Ethan's feet.
"She said you can keep the ring," Daniel said coldly. "It matches your current financial standing."

With that, Deputy Miller tapped Ethan on the shoulder. "Time's up, sir. Step outside the property gates immediately, or you will be arrested for criminal trespassing."
Ethan, Margaret, and Chloe were ushered out onto the wet asphalt of River Oaks. Behind them, the massive iron gates swung shut with a heavy, final clank, locking them out in the cold rain. The tow truck winced as it hauled Ethan's prized BMW onto the flatbed, leaving the three of them standing on the curb with three small bags and nowhere to go.
