Chapter 3 - Shadows of the Past

Three days after the eviction at River Oaks, the sun shone brightly over the glass skyscraper of the Sterling Crest Headquarters in downtown Houston.
On the 50th floor, in a breathtaking corner office overlooking the city skyline, Claire Sterling sat at her polished mahogany desk. She wore a tailored charcoal suit, her dark hair swept back in an elegant chignon. Her eyes were calm, but deep within them burned an undeniable fire.
A knock sounded at the heavy double doors. Daniel stepped in, holding a leather folder.
"Madam President," Daniel said respectfully. "Attorney Brooks is here with the preliminary audit results regarding Mr. Vance's tenure at the subsidiary."
"Send him in, Daniel," Claire replied smoothly.
Nathan Brooks walked in, setting the folder down on her desk. "Good morning, Claire. I hope you slept better last night."
"I slept perfectly, Nathan," Claire said, leaning back. "What did the audit reveal?"
Nathan’s expression turned serious. "It's worse than we thought. For the past three years, Ethan was not only using corporate accounts to fund his personal lavish lifestyle, but he was also diverting small vendor contracts to a shell company registered under his mother's name, Margaret Vance. Over $450,000 has been funneled through that account."
Claire’s lips curled into a cold, humorless smile. "Margaret always boasted about her son's financial genius. It turns out his 'genius' was stealing directly from my company."
"We have enough evidence to file criminal charges for wire fraud and grand larceny today," Nathan stated. "If we proceed, Ethan faces up to ten years in state prison, and Margaret could be indicted as an accomplice."
Claire looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows, watching the cars crawl like ants on the highway below. Seven years she had spent protecting Ethan’s fragile ego. When they first met in college, he was charismatic, sweet, and seemingly humble. But as the years went on, his mother’s toxic influence and his own deep-seated insecurity corrupted him. He wanted the prestige of wealth without doing the work to earn it. And when he couldn't get it on his own, he stole it from the woman who loved him.
"Hold the criminal charges for a few days, Nathan," Claire said, turning back to him. "Ethan still thinks Chloe’s father, Victor Sterling-Cross, is going to save him."
"Victor Cross is currently desperate," Nathan noted. "When we terminated Sterling Crest's shipping agreement with his import firm three days ago, his company lost sixty percent of its valuation overnight. He has no idea why we pulled the contract."
"Then let's invite Mr. Cross to lunch," Claire said, her eyes flashing with strategic brilliance. "It’s time he learns what kind of deadweight his daughter brought into his family."
Meanwhile, in a cramped, two-star motel on the outskirts of Houston, chaos reigned.
The room smelled of stale tobacco and old carpets. Margaret sat on the edge of the saggy bed, crying endlessly, her silk robe stained and wrinkled. "My back hurts, Ethan! This bed is filthy! How could you let that horrible woman do this to us?!"
"Shut up, Mother!" Ethan snapped, pacing the narrow floor, his hair greasy and unwashed. "Just shut up! I'm trying to think!"
Chloe was sitting on the corner chair, her arms wrapped tightly around herself, staring at Ethan with growing disgust. "Ethan, my dad isn't answering my calls anymore. He sent a text saying his business is going under because of you. Is it true? Was Claire really the President of Sterling Crest?"
"It doesn't matter who she is!" Ethan yelled, grabbing his head. "She lied to me for seven years! She made me look like an idiot! I’m going to sue her for half of her company in the divorce settlement! Texas is a community property state!"
Right then, the motel door rattled as a heavy knock sounded.
Ethan rushed to open it, thinking it was a food delivery. Instead, standing in the doorway were two men in dark suits holding official court summonses.
"Ethan Vance?" the process server asked flatly.
"Yes?"
"You've been served," the man said, shoving a thick stack of legal papers into Ethan's chest. "Emergency freeze on all bank accounts, order for immediate surrender of corporate credit cards, and an injunction restraining you from coming within 500 feet of Claire Sterling or any Sterling Crest property."

Ethan stared at the legal documents in horror. At the very bottom of the cover page was a note written in elegant handwriting:
“Welcome to the real world, Ethan. — Claire.”
